What can be done to save this apple tree?

As you can see from pictures of cuts, there is decay.


Half the tree fell a few months ago.



What needs to be done to save this tree?

Sometimes it's best to start over. Plant a new apple this dormant season.
You can't fix trunk decay, keep canopy pruned to help reduce load. Let it be or remove it.

I think that tree is too far gone to save. In future is you have to prune a tree , you need to cut them off flush with the trunk or limb so that it can heal. When you leave short limbs like on that tree they usually start to rot

I inherited this from the previous owner
I will keep in mind not to leave limbs when pruning in the future.

In general, do not prune "flush". Usually best to prune to the branch collar (google that if you need to).
