Why is the bark falling off my Maple tree?

Just following up on this topic. The tree remained healthy all through fall and dropped leaves normally. Now it is budding out with things just starting to open like the rest of the Maples on my property. I'm baffled as to why the bark issue hasn't cause it more problems but it seems like it is doing OK at present. Makes me happy.

That doesn't look like any buck rub I've ever seen...

And in the spring? That would be rather odd, that looks fresh, bucks do not rub in the spring.
