Went in to the shop for a idle problem they tell me it needs to be rebuilt and rebuilt it..Now it is worse. They still have it and tell me it needs part #1125 120 7400 inlet needle plate hk42b..These are parts they say they can't get so a new carb is needed and I was told a used one would be my best bet..They said there are two types of carbs for this saw and I have the bad one and I believe it is the Tillotson carb...

Can anyone tell me if one of these carbs are better Tillotson or bing...?

It is a plain jane 038 with a metal tank...

Thanks.............

I found a pic of the carb in it if it helps...

You should be able to find anything you need for that saw at Bailey's (site sponsor). Tilly vs Bing? I think they're both pretty OK. My Mag 2 has the Bing. Your dealer just wants to sell you a new saw. Pay him no nevermind.

The old Bing 48 was hard to beat. The Tillys with the plastic metering block werent great carbs, I have had trouble with several of them. Other than that Tillotson carbs have worked well for me.

I have never dealt with the Tilly on an 038, but the Bing seems to work well. Bailey's has brand new ones for reasonable.

I think I have one of those carbs laying around. I will check for you tonight to see if I do. I know it will need new diaphrams and gaskets but it came off a running saw.

Nope they know not to even try to sell me a saw...They call me the parts boy...

Thanks but I think I will just get the part from the bay..The carb was just rebuilt so It should last some time....

I've done 038S to 038 Mag conversions, the saws ran the same with a Tilly or Bing, even the Hi/Lo settings were the same

That being said the early 038AV had a different carb that stihl recommends changing if going from 038AV to 038S, not the same as later carbs.

But I bet the latter carbs will work if you tune it right......

I dropped off the parts at the shop today..Maybe they will get it up and running soon....Turns out it did not have a carb washer on it either..They told me the plastic part was wore to the point it could not hold the pin in place anymore...

Thanks for all the help and I will let you know how it turns out....

plastic part

I'm working on an early 038av too. The plastic piece is called a Tillotson Module Plate, part #158-580P(158580), the stihl part #1125 120 7400(1125 121 7400). What I don't understand is how do you set the metering height? There is not any screw to tighten down the tiny lever shaft. Does it merely lay in the recessed area along with the needle valve, spring and fork piece?

So I finally called them up this morning and it seems that they can't fix it..They told me to find a used carb...

So sefh3 do you still have one laying around???

I thought I followed up on this.....

I ended up getting a Brazilian carb from epay (Bing copy) NIB cheap... Installed tuned and it runs great!!!!!!

Thanks for all the help....
