Chipping Crew? Any advice from other owners?

First off you'll need contracts with as many local mills as you can get.Are you planning on cutting your own wood to chip or will you be buying it off of other logging outfits? If your cutting your own wood then you'll be a logging crew with a chipper.Which means you'll need all the logging...

What to do with soft wood?

Spruce and fir is cut into logs, studwood and pulp. We're still moving all of our soft wood and prices are still pretty good. The mills I deal with are sticking with their year round suppliers, which is fine by me. My advice is to talk to guys with their own mill contracts and have their own...

    possible skidder alternatives.

I guess things are a little different in Maine than other parts of the country. The only equipment that doesn't sell good is old CTL's and harvesters.Although my neighbor just bought a '96 Timbco.I've never talked to a logger that isn't looking for a newer or better cable skidder.

    possible skidder alternatives.

Theres no alternative to a skidder!Army trucks and tractors won't be able to get out of their own tracks if we get much more snow. I would suggest buying a decent 200 series Timberjack and selling it when your done.

Ha!What the heck is swarpin'? I can't really give you the definition of twitch but,we use it like"hook up the friggin' twitch" or "I'm gonna go cut me a friggin' twitch" or "I need to get the rest of that friggin' wood twitched the frig out"or "that sonofawhore couldn't twitch out enough...

    Price to Twitch?

That is a" Maine only"logging term. To far away for me!You might find someone local to do it but I think it will be pricey with trucking for the skidder and an hourly rate.Good Luck.
