Old Red Oak Hasn't Shed Leaves - Is it Dead?

Botanically this phenomena is known as marcescence. Oaks are famous for it. Interwebs search and everystuff. You may find it interesting.

large quantity bushwhacker ant bait in Texas

http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs-wm/12607.pdf Active ingredient Bromacil, Bushwacker as the original poster said is in fact an herbicide. A product that blocks photosynthetic processes. Active ingredient Boric Acid, Bushwacker is a VERY different thing altogether. I can see the confusion...

large quantity bushwhacker ant bait in Texas

Aye, but sawdust. We are arborist not agronimists. Malus and Citrus, my friend. Besides the active ingredient is called Bromacil. Is not Bromacil an herbicide and NOT an insecticide? Tell me how an herbicide controls ants.

    Tree coat verses ISA recomendations

Sure, wound coverings have a bad reputation but they have their place in the arborculturalists toolbox. There is credible data that support wound paints. Just ask any arborist working in Wilt territory or the practitioner open minded enough to work with any number of biocontrol coverings for a...

    prune root or leave

I dunno. Timing might be more important than we American arborists think. The ISA BMP revised 2008 says “Growth is maximized and defects are easier to see if live-branch pruning is done in the winter or before growth resumes in early spring.” But, I think we might all agree that dormant trees...

large quantity bushwhacker ant bait in Texas

Nice avatar there fruitloop. Wheres that data? No real arborist would kill ants because they harm trees. A real arborist might see their presence as an indication of a population of hymenoptera in the canopy and concentrate on that issue.. The big black ants cart away decayed wood. How does this...

jgoat. Arborists need not dispense with ants. Do ants harm trees? Support with data. You are peddling a toxic carcinogen to the wrong forum. Hope this saves you some time and grief.

170 foot Doug Fir dying from top down

Cytospora can infect fir. Typical progression of disease is top down. Ipps are specialised now and infest fir. They too kill from the top down. Lots of suspects.

    Advice on sick tree

Rain is very good at what he does. I dig the cut of his jib. The roots of cultivated fruit trees have only a few mycorhizal associations. It is my understanding these endomycorrhizal root associations might find better success without having to compete with the grasses and higher plants sharing...

    Flowering dogwood with problems

I agree... Too much fertilizer. Why fertilize a perennially sick tree? Tree energy comes from that which is stored or that which is produced real time. Make a sick tree grow with fertilizer and you could very well be pushing the tree beyond its capability to produce the needed energy to sustain...

    Dealing w Fireblight

Jace, I know how you have been trying to increase your skill set. You have come a long way. Been fun to watch. Erwinia infection is very closely related to a phenomena called ice nucleation. Research. Look into the copper based bacteriacide called "Kocide". I manage infected trees with target...

how often to apply horticultural oil?

Dormancy? Sure, but perhaps to better dial in efficacy try using oil when insects just begin to respire. Also, remember, Horticulture oil kills every arthropod on the tree. Give some thought to its target use.

Will the root suckers ever stop?

Yeah Jace, You basically have it. Ornamental purple plums are grafted. The suckers in the pic are originating from the root stock. The tree is smarter than we are and is doing what it has to survive. Trees are self optimizing. They put out the amount of solar collectors (leaves) needed. The...

Tree with sign of rot fungus, when to remove?

Did a limb really fall off above the area with dysfunction? Trees are self optimizing systems. Two board certified master arborists' on this thread have recommended the OP consider preservation with root care. Perhaps, Rain, this Acer is not the TRAQ apex predator you believe. :givebeer...

Tree with sign of rot fungus, when to remove?

I worked at the BTRL. Eldun was an amazing mentor. Tell you what rain. Lets each and the other lay out our respected cases here for everyone to consider. You for dismantling and me for preservation. You have the floor

Tree with sign of rot fungus, when to remove?

Interesting how otherwise very smart arborists elect removal of this young vigorous tree over preservation. Guy is not trolling. Wound material IS stronger than normally lignified wood. (Kane, et, all) Look to our industry standards for options for preserving this tree. We can clearly see the...

    Trees and Lawn fertilizer

I am not saying the lower leaf loss is attributed to too much fertilizer but it is never a good idea to manage long lived perennials and a less long lived mono culture of grass pants with the same fertility management strategy. "Good lawn maintenance" is not good maintenance for mature trees...

    Any chance?

nope. Fertilizing a stressed tree is a very bad thing. Ensure optimum cultural conditions and see what happens.
