What is this getting after my bur oak saplings?

They start out looking like the first pic and then after about a month they look like the second pic. I have another sapling about 20 feet from this one and all of this year's growth is completely destroyed.

    Young allegheny serviceberry slowly dying

Hi all, Planted an allegheny serviceberry a few years ago and it did well the first year but ever since it has been dying slowly. Each year I have had to remove main structural branches that have died. This year, it looks like the central leader will be dead by summer. It has vigorous...

Tree saplings purchased online are curved parallel to the ground

Thanks. Which way is best, tie to a bamboo pole or loosely pull upright with twine to a stake? ETA: Also, how long should I expect it to take for the tree to stand upright on its own?

Tree saplings purchased online are curved parallel to the ground

Got a few white oak saplings online a few years ago. Right out of the box, the trees were bending over gently to the point that the top is parallel to the ground. They came with bamboo stakes, so I put the bamboo back on them to try to train them to grow straight. After a year or two of that...

What is wrong with my young white oak?

Hey All, Take a look at the pics of my young White Oak tree, planted in late fall of 2019. Any thoughts on what I am dealing with? The leaves are pale green, have been for some time, and now they are starting to get brown speckles all over them (there is also a heavy dew on the leaves, which...

Damaged tips on White Oak saplings

Hi all, I received some free White Oak saplings from our local conservation office. Some have had their tips pruned (assuming deer browsing or mechanical damage) and they have formed several branches just below the damage. I don't believe this is a healthy growth pattern for such a young...

Should I cut these crossing surface roots?

Thanks for the replies. Yes. The problem with this tree was that it was buried way too deep at the nursery. I didn't realize this fact until I brought it home and started searching for the root flare. If you'll follow the links in my first post, you'll see what I was dealing with.

Should I cut these crossing surface roots?

Joe, I was/am worried that the large roots will continue to rise out of the ground, and will eventually be constricted by the smaller root that crosses it. Especially the root in the first pic...it is crossing the root flare.

Should I cut these crossing surface roots?

Several years ago, I came to you guys for help on excavating a red maple planted way too deep. While it was a lot of work, I learned a valuable lesson in finding the root flare and what a newly planted tree should look like. In fact, that little tree is still my avatar after all these years...

    Trim Southern Magnolia?

My wife (I'll blame it on her) wants to trim the bottom branches of our mature Southen Magnolia. Is this OK to do? Currently, the lower branches droop down and rest on the ground, making it difficult to keep weeds out. Also, she wants to set up some hostas and plants underneath it to make...

    Fastest trees to 40+ feet?

Thanks for the comments. I need something for a quick screen. I plan to come back with better quality trees to plant with them, for when the faster trees don't last.

    Fastest trees to 40+ feet?

Thanks for the reply. Just FYI, my plantings will be out in the open with nothing under or close, except maybe other trees I plant. DJ4wd had the creekbed and driveway issues.

    Fastest trees to 40+ feet?

I assume these are very similar to tulip poplar? Seems like I heard that they will occaisionally lift sidewalks and things, and they also attract aphids, which in turn can make for sticky driveways under the limbs. Thanks for the replies. Any other suggestions?

    Fastest trees to 40+ feet?

Hi folks, I need a suggestion for trees we should plant for quickest growth. The trees need to be fast growing and reach heights of at least 40 feet, preferrably taller. Site: The location will be in full sun with plenty of space overhead and side to side. Risk of wind breakage is not...

suggest a small tree or tall bush for landscaping near house?

Hi guys/gals, I need a suggestion for a small tree or a tall tree-like bush for landscaping close to a house, like around 5 feet from the house. The tree will NOT be in full sun. It will be in part sun, part shade. It would be nice if it kept its leaves all year, but I would prefer to...

Suggest small flowering tree for landscaping

I have an East-facing house that needs some landscaping updates. Half of the house is in full sun, the other half is in partial shade. There are two places where I would like to put small, ornamental flowering trees. Something that has a vertical element to it to break up the horizantal...
