Using a capstan winch on a log splitter boom

Being a commercial fisherman my whole life,I was brought up using capstan winches to lift any amount of weight. You can control the amount of slip you want with the amount of turns you take around the winch head, and you can lower ,stop and raise a load. The winch head does not need to spin that...

    firewood turns to coal

I have the same problem with my Summit. The thing is full of unburnt coals and all you can get in the stove is a couple logs to heat thru the night.I end up shoveling out two buckets of coals every couple days so I can get a load of wood in the stove.I have tried all the suggestions and you would...

    Englander 28-3500 question

The ash dust acts as a buffing compound.I got the idea from this site last year.I have a PE summit and the glass need to be cleaned about once a month.I thought it worked pretty good, the ash sticks good to the moist paper, you just have to finish up with paper towel before it dries

    New Stove!!

I bought a Summit this year, which is the next size up.At first I was not at all impressed with the heat output.A friend has the same stove and I was looking at his and noticed that the air baffle in the front of my stove was flipped around from his so the air holes were facing up.The stove came...

    Old vs New wood stove

I heat a 2 story 1800 sq ft from the basement with a new Pacific Energy Summit .It does a good job until the temps go below 15 .The new stove does not smoke at all when up to temp ,only for a few minutes after loading, and does use less wood than the old stoves I have had.The newer stoves use...

    Which small Stihl to buy?

I have a 180 I bought for my son when he was 12,and he has outgrown it and I find it is great for limbing spruce.A little underpowered for hardwood,I find ,but still does a good job.The next size up ,maybe a 200 might be a better choice.

    Time for a new saw.

Are you buying 4 foot wood or cutting down trees? If you are just bucking stove length out of 4 ' you dont need a big proffesional saw.I have three stihls,180,250 and a 028,and I do the most with the 250.The 180 I use to limb spruce and it is faster than the others for that purpose.I like the 250...

    Little black bugs in wood

After a little research I think they could be bark beetles, never had them in wood before.Hard to tell just where they are coming from, they seem to appear on the but end towards the stove.

    Little black bugs in wood

I brought in a bunch of wood ,maple and birch, and after it warmed up a bunch of small black bugs started crawling around. They are about 1/8th '' long ,I would say that they look like little beetles, they fly and seem to be attracted to light.I noticed some of the maple had dark spots inside the...

New stove.. alot of big coals

I think its the nature of the EPA stoves.I bought a new Pacific Energy stove this year and it has taking some getting used to ,it doesnt burn wood like I am used to.It seems to be engineered to let just enough air in to burn dry hardwood.I used to burn spruce in the fall, but the EPA stove wont...

First time/night impression wood furnace: Not good...

I was thinking about a wood furnace and did a little research on them and some of the manufactures sell a plate with holes in it to go in the bottom over the grates for burning wood. Most of the furnaces are combos for wood and coal and have grates that allow alot of air up thru the bottom of the...

    wood handling equipment/ attachment

I made a log arch that I use with my 4 wheeler and it works great.I just googled log arch and found a good design and made one myself out of a old trailer axle and some pipe.I can pull out 16' spruce logs up to 20'' with a Grizzly 400,and it doesnt do much damage to the ground because of the...

How much heat loss in a traditional fireplace?

If you are burning a fire in a open hearth, it actually pulls most of the air out of the room and up the chimney.I would think that a fireplace is the most ineficient use of wood.Even without a fire going in a fireplace it will pull heat out of a room if the damper isnt closed tight.

    Dutchwest combustor question

I have read that it takes 2000 degrees to ignight smoke in the secondary burn on some stoves. If this stove uses reburn in the combuster it would have to be hot enough to light the gases .Just a thought,I am by far not an expert on the mechanics of wood burning
