Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

I have a new question for all of you. Do you ever get tired of always being right???? To remove the old contaminated fluid: I disconnected all of the lines and cleaned them out, drained as much fluid as possible from the pump and valve, manually worked the shaft back and forth a...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

I made it home early this week and just drained off a gallon of the hydraulic fluid. After sitting for 5 days the fluid it looks like chocolate milk. No water appears to have settled out and any air bubbles certainly haven't worked their way out. I removed all of the hoses and swabbed them out...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

You're probably right GeeVee but I work out of town during the week and can't get my hands on the splitter to try all of these ideas so all I can do is think about it and plan which is a lot like sitting in a rocking chair, it keeps you busy but you don't really accomplish anything. Also...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

I heard that about teflon tape too so I've been using the liquid / paste pipe dope in the tube like I have always used on gas pipes. Thanks for the confirmation Sandhill Crane. By the way I didn't realize that cranes flew in a V but I had a flock of about ten go over my house last week and...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

I just read on another thread that someone puts diesel fuel dryer in his hydraulic fluid to eliminate any water build up. I was just thinking about using some of that to rinse out the hoses and rest of the system before I reassemble it, in an attempt to eliminate a little more water if that is...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

Redprospector, are you worried about dust and dirt getting into the system or is there some other reason not to leave a hydraulic system open for an extended period of time? I'm just trying to find the best way to remove as much of the potentially contaminated fluid from the system before I...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

The shaft is already fully retracted. After disconnecting the hoses should I attempt to extend and retract the shaft a few times to work the contaminated fluid out of the cylinder?

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

Thanks for the input guys, I won't get to the splitter till the weekend but when I do I will hang everything I can up like a hardware clothesline and let it all drip dry. As for the Hurricane, the bad news is 55 MPH winds keep me from fishing but the good news is all of my leaves are in the...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

Thanks for the response kevin j. I must not have explained myself very well. I have no intention of trying to clean up and reuse the fluid if it has been contaminated with water. I was only putting the fluid into a clear container to try and determine if the contamination was water or air...

Possible water in log splitter hydraulic fluid

I have a Huss 5hp, 11GPM logsplitter with a 3.5" x 24" cylinder and after about 20 minutes of splitting the hydraulic fluid foams up and starts coming out the reservoir breather. I've read on some other threads that foaming can be caused by either contamination of the fluid by water or other...

Thinwall conduit for logsplitter hydraulic suction line?

Ayatollah I just realized you have been talking about high pressure conditions. I just wanted to clear up that I am talking about the suction side of the pump so there is very little pressure to consider and what little pressure there is, is vacuum not expansion.

Thinwall conduit for logsplitter hydraulic suction line?

Thanks Ayatollah and I agree with you that thinwall conduit is pretty fragile but I thought if I could sandwich it between hoses which would absorb the vibrations it might work. However, earlier posts have warned against using anything galvanized due to the possibliity of it flaking off and...

Thinwall conduit for logsplitter hydraulic suction line?

I could loop the hose if I reposition the pump, I was trying to shorten the suction line so I wouldn't have to worry about a long loop getting hung up on brush while hauling the splitter thru the woods but that might be the best way to go I would just have to make a hose hanger of sorts to...

Thinwall conduit for logsplitter hydraulic suction line?

I am putting a new pump on my logsplitter and the location of the suction inlet is going to cause a sharper bend than I feel comfortable forcing a section hose into, if I can even get it to bend like that. Can I just cut the suction line hose and install a section of 3/4" thinwall conduit to...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

I've uploaded pictures of my splitter to my album and attempted to include them on this post so hopefully they will be visible to everyone. This is a Huss Abe's Baby, 5hp, 11GPM splitter with a 3.5" x 24" cylinder with (I think) about a 22" shaft. I can't extend the shaft right now so I can't be...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

I will try to add a picture of the splitter this weekend but for now I can give some dimensions. The reservoir is 3" x 3" x 58", after taking away the 1/4" walls I have an interior tank of 2.5" x 2.5" x 57.5" = 359.4 cubic inches or 1.56 gallons of hydraulic fluid. The problem I am going to...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

I would like to install a screw-in type strainer screen in the reservoir for a couple of reasons; 1) to protect the screen from getting bumped, 2) to reduce the number of external connections and possible leak points. Since my reservoir is only 2.5 inches deep my strainer would have to be 2.25...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

OK, that makes sense even to me. However, since my first pump already sucked up something which must have come from the reservoir I am concerned that it might contain other debris. I have drained the hydralic fluid out of it, filtered it and intend to pour it back thru the reservoir a few...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

Yes all hoses on this splitter are threaded 1/2 inch NPT, including the suction side and pump inlet. I might be able to bore and thread a larger hole into the reservoir, what size should the suction side be for a 5hp, 11GPM system? Since I am trying to protect the pump from pulling in debris...

Do you recommend a hydraulic fluid filter or strainer on a log splitter?

Thanks for the response. So I would just have to find a filter mounting plate and a filter which will allow at least 11GPM flow? Would you recommend looking for 11GPM flow specifically or should I go for a higher flow rate? Do you have any suppliers that you would recommend?
