If one is going to slap a new piston assy in a saw, one should at least try to find out what burned up the old one.

True. I never do that they get all new seals and gaskets and vac - pressure tested when I rip one down.

Once a saw is torn down into a hundred pieces, it is a little late in exploring the reasons for the failure.

Right:
Installing NEW piston and other parts into this same saw and sending it back to the woods with employees operating the saw as it is now W/O knowing why it failed will most likely result in same failure again soon. Throwing good money after bad.

He indicated earlier in this thread that he is going to maybe start repairing saws and this was his own saw that scored the piston and he had installed a carb not long ago and the saw failed after a day of hard use. Vac/pressure tester is a needed tool anyway and BEFORE the saw is torn down for new parts it should have the leak test performed. If new stuff is installed it will most likely just fail again very soon due to possibly being run lean.
At least for now he is getting experience with his own equipment instead of some one elses.

I would suggest set the saw back, get a leak down tester, test, then check for parts needed. (if he is going to play with repairing saws) a tachometer and IR tester.

Shame he could not be getting this type experience with Bro in Laws equipment. (instead of his own eq)
