Stihl 028 Problems

Have a Stihl 028 that wouldn't stay running. It was scored bad, so we put a new cylinder and piston in it, and it still does the same thing. It also has a new carb kit, and I cleaned the carb out good a second time just to be sure. It kinda seems to be starving really bad. Probably why it burned up in the first place. Any ideas?

Does it have points? When rebuilding the carb, did you remove the needle and make sure the passage underneath was clear?

If you rebuilt the top end and it has compression, then it's likely a fuel issue. Before replacing the carb entirely, replace the fuel filter and the fuel line. Also, open the low-speed set screw up a tad to be sure it's not starved for fuel as you say above. And, the impulse hose may have a crack in it so that the carb does not receive the signal it needs to send more fuel.

Find the air leak.

That could also be making the impulse hose not work, especially the crankshaft bearing seals. However, these seals tend not to fail on the 028 very often. That's been my experience.
