Hey All.

First post on this site.

I'm an amateur cutter. I have a 60 acre hobby farm that has about 30 acres of hardwood bush. I clear trails for the horses, clean up fallen trees, and cut firewood.

I currently have an HT131 for trimming, a 009 for small stuff(and training the kiddies on), and an 036 Pro for the bulk of the work.

I have an 18" bar on the 036, but find it short on occasion, and perhaps lacking some grunt (although I have little to compare it to).

Anywho, I was thinking of getting another saw with perhaps a longer bar and some more juice. I could flip out bars on the 036, but I kinda like it with the 18" bar, and dont mind having another saw in case the 036 goes down, or I have some larger stuff to plow through.

So, the 460 looks like a good option, but any advice would be appreciated. I would prefer to stick to Stihl as I'm very happy with my current saws, and have a great local dealer.

Thanks in advance.
Vic

460 is the ideal saw to add to your arsenal!

really like my 046 with a 24in bar, but like other said. it'll pull a longer bar without problems.

I think the 460 would be perfect if you are going with stihl I have run one and can say its a nice saw. I would probably stick with a 24 or 28 inch bar even though they will pull a 32 youll have more grunt with a little shorter bar.

I am very happy with my 460 and have no complaints, except the oiler was not doing it's job, so I thought. I removed the bar and started the saw oil was doing fine. So, I drilled hole in the bar larger and through both sides and it works great. then I did it to all of my stihl saws and it improved all of them.

The 460 is a wonderful saw but I'd want more seperation from a 361 for the big stuff. Any therein lies the 660. That's the one I'd get next for your fleet.

An MS460 is a no miss saw. Very well designed, lots of power, and easy on the operator. Get one and you'll smile every time you use it.

The 460 will do anything you need it too. Your 036 must not be running right, mine will pull a 20 inch bar Buried with no trouble. Have even ran a 25 on it before.

Thanks for the feedback on the 460.

The 036 is running good. It does go through anything I give it. Major problem really is that I need a longer bar, so I'm wanting to get a bigger saw to go along with it :D

460 is a great saw. Get the wrap handle and the big dogs. And a 28" bar, skip. It is a real saw, not a a toy, equip it as such

I used one, I liked it as much as a 372 but only ran it for two weeks bucking for a hoechuck show so I can't speak to long term.

I did kinda wonder about that. The 036 is for the most part big enough for what I end up doing.

The 460 is about 25% more powerful, and will easily give me 6"-10" more bar. I kinda figured that would be enough.

The 660 add quite a bit more weight to the equation, and not sure if I would utilize it's size as much.... Hard to tell. I might need to demo them both....

440 - Possible Option to purchase

Hey All.

As mentioned in a previous thread, I'm looking at for another saw. Likely a 460.

Thread located here:
http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=73384

I just called my local dealer to let him know I was looking for another bigger saw. Turns out that just 2hrs ago an arborist dropped off a used 440 to trade in on a new 660.

Anywho, they are cleaning it up as we speak, and hopefully dropping it off on the weekend for me to play around with.

I have no pricing information yet, but any input on this saw and if it will fit into my needs would be appreciated. Read initial thread if you need more input on what I have, and what I'm using it for.

Thanks in advance!

440 is a great saw but your other thread said you already had a 360. I'd want more seperation and would choose the 460 or 660 as it's "bigger brother".

That's nice of the dealer to let you use it for the weekend. What are they asking for it? I agree with davefr, I would step up to a 460 ,650 or 660.

I have a 650 with a dual port cover, and it is night and day compared to my 440 in wood over 24". I rarely use my 650, but it's nice to have.:)

I know the debate over the 650/660, but if you are not using it professionally, it is worth a look. It offers a lot of bang for the buck in my opinion.

Looks -like you are getting some pretty good answers,,,,,

But,,,,,,
I personally think there is plenty of separation between a 440 and a 360!!!

I suppose it really depends on your needs and the size of stuff your cutting!!!!

also they aint making the 440 for the american market,,, I understand they are stihl available in CA.

Good Luck,,, I love mine!!!!!!
