I just bought a new Stihl 270 with an 18" bar. It came recommended as a good firewood saw, so I gave it a shot. I took it out with some buddies to clear some downfalls, and the damn thing wouldn't stay running. Talk about embarrasing when a guy goes and gets a Husky to save the day when your brand new Stihl doesn't work:cry:

I took it back to the dealer and they said it had a cracked impulse line. It seems to run fine now, but I am unsure that it is putting out the power it should. I ran some test cuts on 12" hickory and it cut just OK. I really expected a big difference in cutting speed over my ms180, and as well didn't expect it to bog down as much as it did once I really got into a piece of wood (it feels like it cuts the same as my buddies ms230 w/ 16").

I guess my questions are: 1) do you think there may still be something wrong with this saw that is keeping it from getting full power, 2) is it performing as expected, but I just had too high of expectations for this saw, 3) is it one of those saws that needs some mods to run at full potential?

Maybe there will be others coming along that will be better help, but this isn't sitting quite right.

The 270 is nearly 20 more cc's than a 180. I would think there should be a very noticable difference.

Cracked impulse line on a new saw? I guess it could happen, just seems kinda odd.

You said the saw was new, is the chain also new?

Is there a lot of black around the muffler exhaust?

You're going to have to give it about 10-15 tanks through it to find out what kind of saw it really is. Quit dogging it in and run it a full throttle but don't lean on it for a while and let the saw break in.

Everything on it is new. Let me clarify, yes it does cut faster than the 180. It also has some delays when you initially pull the trigger and later when it transitions from low speed to high speed. But, it doesn't seem to have the power and performance I anticipated from a 50cc class saw.

sorry to hear your having trouble with your saw honestly all brands have little failure's they are a pita but it happen's

your saw being new it will take several tanks of gas before it break's in and the power will come up a bit more ..... also it may need tuned with a tack to get the rated rpm's set.....but it should be outcuttin a 180 in bigger wood

if my saw is bogging i am appling to much pressure in the cut

:agree2:

Just relax.
You don't buy a new car and race it down the street.
You don't buy a new computer and let it run 24/7.
.....
By the way chain saws have more rpm's then race cars.

Just let it run in nice 6-12 inch wood without pressure or any stress for >5 refills. Then you start going on the big wood and after some more refills you just :chainsawguy: run it.

Then you recognize it is not fast enough. So you go out to buy another faster saw and another and another......

You are condemned my friend

don't be fooled

a lot of new saws come from the factory with problems, my BIL see it all the time, he had been a stihl dealer for the past 40 years

I guess Stihl forgot to check the impulse line in the final inspection cell...

I don't know much about the semi-pro saws between the 260 and 361 so I can't say how it should perform. Grab a Husky to save the day I see as normal procedure :greenchainsaw:

There should be no delay in throttle response. Your carb is likely out of tune. Take it back to the dealer and have them make it run right.

Agreed, get it tuned. Sounds like the EPA set it up for you. Prolly runnin lean, tune it before it burns up.

:agree2:

At least too lean on the "L" if throttle response is bad - could well be out of whack on the "H" as well..........

A 270 should outcut a well run-in 230, even when new.

I am a "STIHL" fan and this makes me LMAO I have to say!!! I do think there is something up with the operator and the chain in that video LMAO!!!

OK, my 270 doesn't cut that slow, but my high RPM's don't sound any better than that.

Just curious, but with a good firewood saw (maybe 270, 361 or even 441), how long should that cut have taken?
