stihl ms 180 beach and moan

this little ms 180 of mine is going to drive me nutz first the stock carb goes to krap and they replace it and the air filter on warranty. last week the saw did it again. carb needed cleaned and a new air filter at a cost of 40.00 saw chipz. this is crazy for a saw with less then 10 hours on it. im so :censored::censored::censored: mad i am going be forced to put a velocity stack on it since the stock air filter can not do its job. this thing just gets used for my personal firewood use only no pro use. for tougher jobs i use my 026. this is the most saw i own. it goes down more often then it runs. i love the power to weight ratio just hate this:taped: air filter. just needed to vent about a small saw nightmare. i aint against these small sawz they should be just fuel and go sawz.

I try and try to tell you guys there are better options out there. No one wants to listen:welcome: Don't take my comment personally. Sell it and go buy yourself a small Redmax or Shindaiwa saw.

Got rid of the 170 and don't miss it a bit. Love my ms210 with the muffler opened up. Used to hate the 210 but it has been proving itself here lately.

Check out the 211, alittle more weight than the 180 but a better saw imo.

Carb needed cleaning in 10 hours? With a stihl filter? na... You better look at the fuel you are running, or you fuel hose or something... maybe your servicing dealer is out to lunch? Something doesn't smelll right...

first time the mechanic did the full diagnostic in front of me, so i believe him on the first carb issue. second time i do not know what the hellz going on with the saw. they say it is micro dust getting into the carb. and no way in :censored::censored: is the gas suspect. i think it boils down to :censored: design. it is frustrating to have to modify a stock saw because of poor manufacture design. i had just put a clean nearly new filter on the saw. my jd cs 81 eats tons of fine dust with no carb probz. so now i am force by lack of money to modifie a stock saw because of poor manufacture design so i did look a 210 series saw to much dollar for a limited use saw. i only use this to trim long fire wood and road hazard tree removal. if i need a bigger saw i use one of my falling sawz. this was supposed to replace two weak older saw for the emergency use- firewood trimming. so i guess warranty is not a null and void issue any more. so time to cut up this saw and fit a velocity stack since stihl stock air filter are a joke

I'd sell it before I butchered up a new saw. No way you can fit a v-stack and filter under the cover.

What's wrong with the filter on the 346? We use one at work to cut up God only knows how many pallets a year, and I only have to tap out the filter once a year. The only time Ive see na problem is when the spark arrestor plugs and the filter gets fuel logged, makes a mess...but brake cleaner and compressed air fixes it right up.

The inlet for the filter isnt even in the front of the saw, it pulls air from the flywheel area and from the crankcase itself.

brad i know it may seem impossible but when ya piss off pnw faller anything can happen. me am going to take a hole saw to the top cover and from there who the hack knows what may happen, i plan my destruction moment to moment. me i am so pizzed off at this saw i am going to Fosterize the :censored::censored: out of a poorly engineered design to relive my anger. i need a six pack of cold ones and 30 minutes to Fosterize it. i am sorry i ever thought a 200 saw with a well know brand was worth buying. i wanted a small light weight saw and all end up with is a nightmare. my 30 year old mini mac 35 has a wore out air filter and it runs no matter what i try to do to it . and why is a saw sucking in fine dust in moist spring time air causing the sawz carburetor to have to be clean and re adjusted sorry to sound angry just hate when good money buys a name branded tool and they can not design it right from the factory and then make the customer pay for their error

I would like to see what you are talking about. I am not a fan of that series of saws but have not heard about the issue you are having. Stihl sells truckloads of those saws around here and they are usually well regarded. Personally, I would rather have the old Mac.

IMHO.. the 180 filter is better then the 021-025 types...

Fines passing the filter have nothing to do with the carb problem. Exactly where was the dirt in the carb that needed cleaning?

I've got two 180's and there both really great for what they are! I brought the second one spares or repair off ebay, it was poorly cared for and I'm not joking, looked like they had run it with no air filter! There was crud from the airbox right through the carb, I mean a lot! The saw still ran with no problems, even this mucky! Cleaned it up, doesn't take to long and now it runs like new! So not sure what the problem is with yours!

I agree the air filter and box are a poorly made, but then they were trying to make them on the cheap I guess!

I`ve got a 180, and admittedly its not the best design of filter but i change it regularly as it soon gets out of shape knocking the dust off. Dust getting in will go straight through the venturi and into the cylinder. If the carb is getting blocked its a fuel issue no?

I will have to agree that I don't believe the fines getting past the filter are the problem. Mine had the same filtering issues but I never had a carb problem.

It's a pee poor design. Who would put a filter on the front of a saw? Plugs up quick and is always needing carb adjustment. I have a 14" and 16" b&c for it, I will trade you it for that 260 and I know the 260 doesn't run....
