Is this a ring snag, or what?

Worth a try

OK I know that there is going to be serious feedback on this method, and probably deservedly so, but here goes. I would strip this down as much as possible, hopefully to just the piston and cylinder. I would take out the plug and put in a pretty healthy amount of black powder, cut off the top of the spark plug and drill a hole through the plug and get some canon fuse and stick the end of it into the whole in the plug, and put the plug back and get it tight, and leave about a foot of fuse on the outside to burn. Make a way to contain the parts when they separate from some heavy pieces of wood and put it all in a remote an area as possible. Light er up, get WELL back. and see if it comes apart, chances are pretty good that something will, and the most likely is the piston will come out. Since the p&c is probably shot anyway there is not a great deal of downside here, and if the cylinder is OK this method will probably not make it any worse. I advise always taking advantage of the opportunity to blow something up when it becomes available. Results of a misspent youth when dynamite and nitro were not much restricted. JR

Having removed stuck cleaning jags from muzzleloaders, using essentially the same method,I will go out on a limb and say "Yup,Thar she blows!!"I don't know if this method would qualify as a "destructive device",and thus be very illegal,so I would advise against it.

I would say you have a pretty slim chance of getting it apart. After saying that, here is what I might try.Carefully use acid in the cylinder to try and weaken or break some of the adhesion points. If this is a clamshell design,as was suggested, drop the pan and see if there is enough clearance to twist the piston in the bore. You might have to pull the bearings to gain enough clearance to turn the crank side to side and get the piston moving in the bore. All in all,a lot of trouble and potentially dangerous, but I know you are familiar with using the acid and will work out a safe plan.Once you get it (the piston) moving a bit, even just side to side, you have a chance of getting it out.Good luck and be safe, take it slow if you try this.

Could be

It seems that ATF gets to decide what is a destructive device, but if necessary an explanation of what was trying to be accomplished would probably suffice. My cousin who is pretty much a genius and I managed to make nitro in his basement when we were in high school. It's not nearly as dangerous as TV portrays, but still pretty damn stupid on our part. It was the only time I ever heard his father swear, when he found out what we had done. And his father is the one who let us blow up rocks with dynamite when we were 16. Since those days I have used black powder for many unorthodox applications, safety always being of the first order. I'm pretty sure this would work though. Of course this comes from someone with a working canon sitting in the front yard. Wife hates it as a lawn ornament. JR

Dixie Gun Works, ever heard of them,is just down the road from me.You would have quite a time there, plan a trip this way sometime.Hank Jr. is a cannon shooter, got a place at Paris, about an hour from here.Great spectator sport.

Used to get their catalog for years. Except for the canon I don't do a lot of black powder shooting any more. I use my BP shot gun about once a year, but haven't shot the rifles for a while. If I get down that way I will check it out though. I just think that my method would get a stuck piston out with little effort, and a lot of fun. JR

If its welded to the cylinder...heat up the cylinder with a handheld mapp gas torch. It will produce enough heat to break it loose.

let marvel mystery soak in it for a few days and itl probly come right apart

Their catalog is online now too,not as comprehensive as the print one,but interesting none the less. That HankJr. comment was true,he drops in about once a month. He shoots his cannons on the 4th of July most years,he tries to keep his neighbors happy.I know you're right.Try to make the re-enactment at Shiloh(in April) sometime, big time cannon enthusiasts from all over.

Back on topic, that saw really is a challenge for SM.I think he's up to it,we'll see.

I have a loaner saw just for that, a beater MS250. Don't care if it comes back alive or not, but for the last few years it has survived somehow. Most folks have a weedeater, I just tell them to use that fuel.
bad idea
Or give them a can of mix and tell them to only use it.

good idea.. IMO if someone needs a chainsaw, a tractor or other specialized tool, they get an operator too..my truck isnt that big a deal, most of my friends are good drivers, but 2 strokes require more attention..

I agree. You can borrow me and my chainsaw, but not my chainsaw.

I guess it would be the same way if i had a wife...

This is a Pro Mac 850 that a freind of mine bought new in '77. It has alot of sentimental value to him. but it locked up on him. so now i have to find a pm850 p/c for it. but what caused this?

put a braker bar on fly wheel nut and then use that to free
