The Trifecta.

I had the magic going tonight, my A/S brethren:

Chainsaws - Had my Snellerized 385XP screaming. That bad boy flat-out runs. Kudos to Brad. Just for giggles, I the 32" bar on it. Didn't need it but wanted to run it, so I did.

Fire - I had a big burn pile going to handle all the noodles I was making.

Guns - I noticed a bald tail wiggle out of site when I moved a pine round. So I went into the house and returned with a Ruger Singe Six loaded with CCI .22LR Bird Shot rounds. Move pine round out quickly and start shooting. I went through 12 rounds. Score: JQ = 11. Rats = 0.

It was a good night. My wife and daughter were laughing at me for playing with my toys with such reckless abandon.

Saws, guns and fire indeed form the perfect trifecta while the sun is up. Come sundown, put the saws and guns away, and break out the cigars and your favorite adult beverage and sit by the fire. And voila, the perfect nighttime trifecta to follow up the perfect day. That's what our hunting cabin is all about!

I did all but the guns today but I did get to play with my ASV RC30. Finished cleaning up a large (32" dbh) pine tree take-down and just brought most of the debris and wood home to burn. I spent about 40 minutes stacking the logs in a teepee shape around the brush with the skid steer. Then got out the bucket of dried pecan noodles I saved just to start fires with. Lit the pile on 3 sides and squirted a little diesel on it. 5 hours later, there are still foot high flames coming off the logs.

Glad to help, and thanks to all you guys for your chainsaw advice. I've been doing the guns and hunting thing for decades, but when we built our little "lodge"--really just an overgrown shed with no plumbing or electricity--the need for large quantities of firewood became very apparent. The info here on AS has been the only source of real-world hands-on experience I could find, and I've learned so much here. I'm very grateful. Now I enjoy the woodcutting as much or even more than the hunting and shooting. I'm getting too creaky and fat to run the hills all day so I send my son-in-law and his brother out while I drive the truck and pick them up, or take the saws out to cut more firewood--it's become a whole new source of entertainment, one that helps me appreciate the property all the more.

And Banshee, like the saw advice you often see here about saws, regarding the handguns: Get both. The .22 is great for learning, cheap to shoot and great for teaching newbies to shoot. The double-action .357 is the bigger pistol I usually point people towards because they typically have good trigger pulls, and you can shoot mild .38 loads for cheap and with minimal noise and recoil. And then you should learn how to reload your .38 and .357 cases... but this is a whole 'nother topic for discussion!

The Single 6 is really a wonderful little revolver. I got it to teach my kids how to shoot. It is very accurate and a blast to shoot. My boys like shooting a "cowboy gun". Works pretty well on rats I've discovered.

"All work and no play make Jack a dull boy"...and pretty grumpy too...

Life comes down to balance - family - Friends - Work - Play - Relax - Excercise - God - Worship - Give - Live - Learn - Love

Not necessarily in that order, and may not apply to all (a lot skip the "excercise" part).

But honestly, as times being what they are, there is all the more reason to "Seek Peace and Pursue it".

So find what gives you peace, grab a big handful of it, and share some with others...

Sorry, Gents. I was so busy with work, that I didn't think to go inside and get the digital camera for some pix. The rodent remains were pretty graphic. My girls said: "eeeeeewwwwww"
