someone please tell me the pros and cons of such a trade. My 262xp is somewhat modified with a port mod and a muffler mod. I'm running a 20" bar and chain, chain is origon full chizle and the saw runs like a raped ape. But a ms361 would be new and from what I've heard it will perform wonders!

Based on power alone, I think you would be disapointed with the trade. A good running 262 is as good as it gets. The 361 might be a bit smoother on the vibes, but it won't run with it in the cut, especially if you are ported like you say.

Don't buy the "work wonder" hype, stock, the saw is a dog. I lakerized my muffler and am now happy, but stock turned my stomach.

There's nothing wrong with the 262 its just that I've heard so much about the 361 that I was wondering if there would be a plus, if any, to switching to the stihl.

If I was you I would wait on the new stihl 362. That is what I am doing. They say that it is supposed to be a good amount of more power than the 361. I just wish that they would hurry up already.:dizzy::cry: BTW I bought a new 361 and it was'nt what it's all cracked up to be so I sold it.

Yup, I thought long and hard about selling mine, but then I did the muf mod and it turned into a different saw, sound and performance. Now, at least I can take it out of my purse and run it in public.

i agree run them back to back if you can. you might kick yourself in backside for such a thought afterwords

They don't make 262XPs anymore

You'll always regret selling / trading that saw if it's in decent shape. This means you'll eventually be back looking for another. The saw you have is a known entity, if you ever decide to get another because you traded it, it's a gamble.

MS361s will be around for a while, or will live as a similar model, so you can always save up and get one.

As another thought, the 262XP if its in good condition will bring far more if you sell it outright than if you trade it. Again my belief is to do neither.

Take Care

I have actually had both saws here at one time. A dealer friend of mine had a mint 262 and I tried it out for a couple of weeks. It and my 361 were in near new condition. Honestly, you would have to have a stop watch to tell which was faster, they were that close. Both were completely stock with 20 inch bars and the same chain. The 262 started faster, idled better, and may have oiled a little bit better. The 361 seemed to pull a little better in hardwood and was a touch smoother.

I ended up keeping the 361 and letting the 262 go to someone else, there wasn't enough difference in my opinion to change saws, esp. considering my 361 was only a year old. If I had the 262 to begin with, and tried the 361 I'd probably have kept the 262 though. I figured if I was having that much trouble making my mind up which I liked better I needed to keep what I had.

I have both right now. The comparison is funny when you think about it, nothing is similar except the CC range. I love the smoothness of the 361 and with a sharp chain, it is respectable in performance. When I'm doing firewood after 8 hours of tree work, the 361 is my fav to run.

Now the 262, it is just a mean mofo. Sounds mean, cuts like a raped ape and just puts a smile on your face. But then you analysis the feel and handling of it. While nothing is terrible, nothing feels quite as nice as the 361.

If it was me, the performance difference is too wide for me to keep the 361. The 262 just represents what makes it so much fun to run a chainsaw: mean, loud and fast. All this and the saw is stock!

Good to see you around again Andrew, where you been hiding??

There was a thread that "used" to be a sticky that all the new guys could find. Now you have to search.:monkey: Try searching "Lake 361 muffer mod".
