I cut some firewood today and ran across this tree.
It was down and I thought it was an ash. The bark looks exactly like an ash.

When I cut the dead off, it had a dark center like a hickory only bigger. As I was splitting it it is real stringy like an elm. This stuff smells faintly like a horse.

Has anybody got any Idea what it is???
I think it may be an Ashbark hickoryelm!!!LOL

It is heavy as lead and I'm hoping it will burn and I didn't waste an afternoon.
That is the good thing about these OWBs tho'.
When the blower kicks on they will burn darned near anything.

I cut a lot of wood that looked just like that in MN, where we don't have local Hickory. We call it Black Ash (fraxinus nigra)

That has the bark of a Butter Nut but the tree looks to be too tall and straight. Our Butter Nut Trees like to fill our more, soft and smell. I cut a lot of firewood in the past 30 years and Dad would have called that tree a Black Ash. I'll be cutting soon, I'll look for a Black Ash and split one. Maybe next week. They say that other trees do not like to Grow around a Butter Nut. Something about the roots and the oil in the tree. ??? Have a Great Day, John

Looks like elm by the lichens on the bark and how stringy the wood looks and the dark core. Maybe a little dutch elm disese thrown in by the looks of the bark.
