Cut down an oak that the previous owner of my house thought would be a good idea to plant in the corner of the property in between a fence and a power pole.Would love to take it down all the way but cant think of a good way to cut around the fence pole without tearing up my saw or hurting myself. So I guess it stays like it is.

I got to use my 044 after rebuilding it and getting it tuned up. This is my first real saw and one of my first successful rebuilds. And it was a blast to use, I love running that thing. The other is a husky 55 I rebuilt the top end on still got some work to do on that one got a small air leak I think from the carb.View attachment 132024

Own an axe? Sorry, best suggestion I have, aside from using heavy equip. to rip it up.

I mean if you want you could just go at it with a thrashed chain if you have one, very carefuly, expecting to break it, and then work really really carefully around it and stop when you get in close proximity. if you can get it small enough and get the right opening you might be able to slice through the immediate area with a sawzall. Especially if you do some boring cuts you can probably get it to the size that you can just cut the remaining wood and post with a sawzall. Use wedges to keep your cuts open so the sawzall can work.

You can hire someone to grind out the stump, but that will cost you a chunk of change. Or you can keep the change and take manly matters into your own hands.

Dig out and down around the roots as much as you can without hurting the fence. Then take it out a bit at a time with an ax and a bow saw (hand, not chainsaw bow). Both ax and bow saw will dull. Be ready for that by sharpening the ax as needed and replacing bow saw blades as needed. Honestly, an ax is really all you need if you keep as much dirt out as possible and a sharp edge on that ax.

Once it's out a bit below current ground level, fill earth over the stump. When sprouts shoot up, spray them with Roundup. Case closed.

I have a loop of rescue chain I use for them. Its rated to cut through metal roofing have done a few long were ive know a fence post is in it.

Didn't't think about the ax, I think i will try that out. I do have some worn chains for the husky and a worn bar. After I get the mess I made cut up and disposed of Ill give that a shot. And I have used the rescue chains before, I work for the fire department and we have jreds with the bullet chains, works great on light metal and roofs but they suck in wood. Had a brush fire with a tree burning from the inside out maybe 8-9" dbh and it took a half an hour to cut though it. I was going to call it quits and leave like it is but I think I can have more fun with an ax and some other hand tools.

I could have not said it better ! This is my suggestion as well. Remove the stump using hand tools and take your time, do not be in a hurry. If you cannot remove the stump in an hour, remove it in a day. If you cannot remove the stump in a single day, remove it in a week. Most important, do not hurry, work patiently and always keep a beer at an arm's reach!

The same way StihlyinEly advised you, if there are new leaves sprouting from the soil, after you finished your work, spray them with herbicide as often as necessary.

I have an ax and I have beer. The tree had a fungus on it that was killing it and its real dry and kind of a brittle soft. So It may not take as much swinging as it looks. My main goal was to get everything out from around the power pole before it was in the transformer or high tension lines and cut everything that was hanging over the neighbors yard through there power drops and cable TV drops. I figured I was stumped before I started, but now I think I am gonna cut this thing out. Worst case I might bust my ax handle.

axe handle cheaper than new chain

Leave the wood and the post intact.... if the ground is dry, get a BIG chain, hook it up to your truck (or tractor) and pull the whole shebang out of the ground at the same time...
Oh, and get a video camera rolling and try to make a truck commercial out of it, LOL!

Thought about burning it or dynamite, but I think that may destroy a little more than just the tree. And I have though about special chains, definitely the quickest and easiest but I cant justify the cost for one cut. So I am just gonna hack through cut the pipe and finish it off next time I can play with it.

Your backcut needs to be at a steeper angle...

If your talking about the piece with the dew can my goal was just to cut enough to pull it down with a rope. The only place I could stand was right were it was going to land so I cut from the sides best I could until I could pull it down. It was only about 6ft high from where I cut it at. Nothing about that tree was simple, its at the corner of four different yards and 90% was hanging in someone elses yard. So with my limited experience tying off and cutting I did the best I could with a lot of trial and error.
