i did the math. i know what i'd have to do. thing is i didn't advertise 20" wood. i advertised 24 inch wood. thats what i'm trying to make the person happy over. I am NOT going to take them "a full cord" of 20 inch wood. I'm driving a 157 miles to deliver it to start with BEFORE christmas eve. and i have to go cut and split said wood today. I polietly email them back and said "i make my wood 24 inches, if you need it shorter you are going to get a stack shorter than a cord" they seemed ok with it so we'll see when i get there. I'm going to show them whats on the truck when i get there and if it isn't acceptable for the agree amount of $$'s i'm going to a) throw it in a creek or b) haul it home.

jimbojango the thing that is getting to me on this deal is i ADVERTISED 24" wood. I don't want to make it 20 inches, i have to go custom cut it. Its retarded to think that i should do MORE work for the same dollars. I think its going to be "you're getting 20 inch wood, the same amount of pieces as if it was 24" and its your fault you want it shorter."

Why the harshness? Advertise what you sell and sell it. If you don't do custom orders, don't do them. I personally wouldn't offer just 24" wood, as that is too long for most wood burners around here.

Being self employed for most of my life, making my customers happy is a top priority.

for small pickups this works well a full cord 4x4x8 is 400 pieces

Is it missing some numbers? I mean do you get a lot of takers on the big empty bin with the zero? Sounds like a fair deal, ya get what ya pay for with that but I don't think the small bin is worth 500 I will tell you right now.

1. there is not enough profit in wood to drive 157 miles to deliver it.
2. I can only assume people want seasoned wood at this point. most people who only want a cord aren't pre-buying for next season in December. Did you inform them that they're not getting seasoned wood and they will not be able to burn it this year?

I think your post shoulda read "how do i make myself happy by the 24" cord".

If you want to sell 24" length wood, then obviously you've reduced your customer base. You can't be upset when somebody wants otherwise. Just politely tell them you don't have that length wood and if you're kind enough, refer the business to a more agile and versatile firewood dealer. It's pretty simple to me. You'd still be making "people happy" if they got a good referral. And maybe they would refer all their customers wanting only 24" length splits to you, but I highly doubt it...

don't think I'll ever be in the firewood bis,but a man has to do things sometimes he rather not.
I have a friend in the bisiness who makes a fair amount of cash and have even bought some from him myself over the years but he is well set up and delivers a good product at a fair price.

I travel out to where i'm going for business anyway. So i basically was trying to find some extra cash. I would rather sell 16" pieces. which i quoted them a price for also. I quoted a 16" pieces cord and 24" pieces so it made the math nice. The wood is FREE as far as I'm concered its the labor that is where the dollars are. And the wood is seasoned, been in 12 foot logs for 2 years and we split some last week and its plenty dry. The problem i am having with the cord sales is that i don't WANT to sell it that way and pretty much expresed it. If i do sell it its going to be in lenghts i can manage with or i just won't do it. I'm NOT in the firewood business and don't want to be. Going to western Kansas with hardwood is an easy sell because they have NOTHING for wood. I was basically trying to help some people out because i was going anyway.

Just tell him you don't do custom lengths. Lacking that, since you still have to cut it, why not cut 20"? Very little time difference cutting acord of 20" vs 24".

using the one row method 4 ft high will work for you 24" 16 ft is a cord priced at X 20" 19.2 ft long is X 16" 24' is X they're all cords but your right they're more labor and you can charge accordingly. Or you can figure price at 16" and then you will be happy at 20" and ecstatic at 24". Note: I have long said this is the motive behind ricks etc. Wooders don't want to get ripped off but are afraid to advertise real pricing because of the ricksters and face corders out there. I decided to quote my price on 16" stuff and benefit on labor for anything longer.
