Am I the only one that touches up new chain before I use it?


Lately, I've noticed that chain from the factory has gotten sloppy. Most especially Oregon brand, but I've noticed it with Stihl as well. Mostly the rakers are off +/- .010, and the gullets look horrible. Wonder why the drop in quality?

Or am I weird?

You're weird alright, but not because of the chain...

I always square ground new chain, regardless of the brand. New chain is not that sharp. Carlton was the sharpest out of the box when I was working in the woods.

I do it out of habit. Always have. Dont like the way they come out of the box.

Well i dont touch mine up like you but i noticed the same thing. i bought a brand new Stihl full chizz for my 24'' 046 and it cut like crap for a new chain. i looked it over and wow i almost took it back.

i seem to have to put 4-5 strokes on stihl chain before ever touching the gullet anymore and the rakers are always high for my likings

its normal procedure for us to take the drags down a stroke or 2 on a new chain

The cutters are stamped then ground,then assembled.No wonder the rakers are not consistant.

I would like see somebody touch up a couple of new chains, throw them together with some straight out of the box and pick which is which by using them.

I just use them right out of the box, but I do notice they cut better after I sharpen them the first time.

I've only been around for a year or so, but Wiggs, you be a little strange.:hmm3grin2orange: I haven't noticed any of my Carlton chain I ordered a little while back having any issues, but I don't quite have a trained eye for it yet, that will come with time.

I hope not more than I.While I was using my Oregon bar mounted file sharpener, I had a brilliant idea.Instead of pushing the file from the inside of the cutter to the outside, I reversed the process.Now I went from the outside to the inside.So now I have a professional grinder but the tool is still hanging on the wall. And yes the chains cut very well but it was a bit of a pane to sharpen, Ken

I run a file over every chain before the days cutting weather new or used, which is not to bad considering i just cut firewood.

Bah humbug. I only use stihl chains and i have never had one act like she didn't cut... but it does come off the spool, not out of a loop box. Might just be me, but unless its in hedge i don't worry about how sharp a chain is until it starts throwing dust instead of chips.

How stihl chain cut the best out of the box and how the factory grind was somehow far more superior to a file job or regrind and no-one could duplicate the performance of the factory grind...........

So has stihl changed something? are there loops not as good?

The only way i wood file a new round chisel stihl or oregon chain is if it was going to a GTG and you can bet it would'nt be with a round file.Checking the rakers is different but you can't do much about short ones anyway.
