But wouldn't that larger carb/air filter setup throw off the weight/balance of the saw and make it less desireable?? :tongue2:

Perhaps that added weight in the back coupled with increased power would make it more comfortable for those longer bars to be used on the 346??

I have never seen a 346 come with anything but the yellow meshed filter. That is not the winter filter. They do pass some fines though. Wiggs, you need a 357 carb setup anyway, so don't waste your money on another 346 filter:clap:

Are you talking OE or NE saws? My OE came out of box with flocked. I have worked on a few OE's and 353's all had flocked. I ran a guys NE that had the yellow mesh. I picked up a new oem yellow mesh for mine and it let dust get by. The flocked does't. I don't know why some of you guys are using sealer on the seams. A little vaseline or gease is what you want to use. You need to split the filter to clean it, and rtv will swell from fuel.

Both my OE (2001) and NE (2010) came new with yellow mesh filters. I'm trying a felt/flock filter on the OE right now, but will likely go back to mesh, as it's much easier to clean. Actually, I'll just put the 10 year old mesh filter back on, because nothing wrong with it.

Any modding required or just a simple swap?

Thanks for the detailed list. Does this setup make a significant improvement? My 346 is stock except for non-cat muffler. I like the stock saw but would certainly be intrested in making notable improvements along the way. (Sorry wiggs, not trying to change the subject on the thread)

Well, I dont like it, but I guess I'll stick some grease around it and let her eat.

Is there a flocked filter available for it? Or is the nylon mesh the only way?

I had the same problem with my 346 cutting dry dead wood. I discovered mine getting by in about two tanks. I switched to the felt filter no more problems. The nylon filters suck cutting dead wood. I also switched filters on my 266

Mine is the mesh filter with about 15-20 tanks through i and no leaky. Looks like new inside still, me thinks you got a dud filter.

What kind of wood are you cutting? I have about 95 face Chords of firewood with my saw and a ton of other uses with my 346 no problems with the filter other than a good tap cleaning. Like I said I use the felt filter. Clean as whistle down the throat of the carb

Cutting alder, maple, hemloch, fir, and cedar with a little cottonwood on occasion. I also cut stuff that has been bone dry for years and still no issue with the mesh filter. Like yours, my carb throat is spanking new still.

Well, another tank thru it, this time with a liberal amount of grease around the seam. Still no good. Sucking fines in thru somewhere...

I have a replacement on its way, via. Warranty.

All the older 353 and 346 had the white flocked filter, and that's what mine came with. At some point somewone within Husky made a bad and misinformed decisions to start sending the saws to the US with the winter filters, I call them winter filters because that's all they're good for. The flocked filter isn't perfect at first, but with some use it will block 99% of the dust. All the other fixes others have suggested are just band aids and really will not work with the filter you have, as you've already found out.

Well, maybe I spoke too soon about my filter . I bought my saw new December last year, and have used it very little because I done had too much wood cut, Probably less than 10 tanks over all. I checked the filter some time back( dont remember when) and it was in good shape. Last week I ran a few tanks through it cutting some beetle killed pine that was still standing, and some dead dry hickory. Finally decided to do the muffler mod since Ive had the parts for months, and while I was at it I blowed it off real good and checked the filter, It looked just like the picture Wiggs posted on the first page! Maybe it was from the dry wood, but I still dont like it. My intake throat wasn't bad yet, but it was on its way. Guess Ill be finding the PN for the flocked filter.

On a different note, the 288 deflector muffler mod sounds good.
