Bring your smartphone. Take and post pics. You want 'better' AND 'cheaper'? Hmm. Old Poulans fit that description....

:popcorn::popcorn:

they asked me what they where worth to me i said i would have to see them i know one is an older 2 man saw but dont know make or model yet

Well for that many saws and if they are all need of some fixing, start your bidding low, very low. That many saws, $200 or lower. You might think it is low, but it might be right up their alley. With that many saws there should be a couple in the lot you can get your money back on and then fix/part out the others for a nice profit.

I agree, recently did a similar deal (yesterday) and that was the price I started with.. about $10 a saw and went from there! Put up pictures here and we can help as well.... or find somebody here willing to look at cell pictures while your there to give you an idea of the nicer ones.

im hoping i can get most if not all for 100-200 the guy that contacted me said his Dad use to buy 2 or more a year and have at least 30 or 40 of them in the old house and sheds. Also a box of new chain saw blades and parts for various models. Most of them are fairly new within 10 years. There are some older ones and a real old 2 man chainsaw

I think you need to define what you mean by "older" and with "cheaper", before you get any really helpful answers.

just got back and most are poulan woodshark 1050s, wildthings, one poulan pro and a bunch of the yellow things, a couple eager beavers and a 1947 mercury 11hp 2 man saw

I personally wouldn't buy any particular one of those..or the Mercury outboard.

You didn't say what he was asking for the lot of 'em...??

I might go $100 - $150...but NO more...but as said...I have no desire for what you listed.

But...that's just me - - If you're just wanting saws to tear down and "mess around with"...

The Poulans are easy to work on...but really have very little re-sale value.

Ditto - it's worth nothing if parts aren't available - unless in 20-30 yrs somebody offers you $100 for your pile of old saws.

luck,greg

The saws you are talking about are only worth about $5 or $10 a piece if not running but complete (if that) because they sell for about $50 in running condition.

It appears the person used a cheapo saw until it broke and then just bought another one. So it would be safe to assume that NONE of them are in operating condition. These saws, if they need a carb kit and some tlc are really not worth repairing unless you are just bored and looking for something to do. If the cylinders are scored, they're junk.

If I was faced with a pile like that I would be eyeballing it to determined how much it weighed. Scrap value is really what you're dealing with. If there are new chains and so forth they may have a little value but there are so many of these saws around the country that have like new bars on them, there is not much resale value for those either.

If there were a bunch of old Poulan Countervibes or something similar there would be a bit more value. I would make a LOW offer and if he says no, just walk. It's not likely there is a pile of people itching to buy this junk. As I stated, scrap value at about 12 cents per pound...

he was wanting 15 dollars a piece all where complete most would probably run with a carb rebuild i might go back tommorow or monday and get a few to sell and a few to fix for back up saws

I would take a good compression tester..(with Schrader valve at the end) and test compression.

As said above..if it's got a scored piston...it's junk...absolutely worthless..!!

If he's close by...I'd just buy a very few and see how easy / hard to get running.
(I'd be looking more at the back-up keepers..than ones to sell..imho)

There's little demand...so he's not likely to be swamped with buying offers..!!

At 15 a piece Id bring a compression gauge with me, only pay for the ones that have over 130 psi and offer to throw the rest out for him. Then you will have extra carbs to swap around with. I had a poulan 42cc with the strato engine, with a 14 inch bar on it. Dam fine little saw for leaving in the back of the pick up truck. My nephew was kind enough to straight gas it. I know they are not Husky or Stihl or Dolmar or well you get it. But what they are is cheap little firewood makers. Good Luck with your purchase.

I don't think I've ever seen any low-price Poulans that developed more than 110-120 PSI compression. Jus the nature of the saws.....low compression and will burn almost anything (like my '73 Jeep CJ5). Not a bad saw, just not a precision performance machine.
With the economy the way it is, guys are buying them used for $50-75 to make a few bucks cutting wood.

keep in mind thats lots of folks wont do simple maintenance.Could be the type of guy that wouldnt even adjust a carb ,hed rather just buy a new one.Clogged spark arrestors are a common problem to which is easily fixed.I once bought an almost brand new Husky 51 that the owner said ran fine, but it used oil.:msp_confused:

Excuseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...................................................................................me.

Come by my place and you can run a well thrashed 42cc Craftsman/Poulan that pumps over 140.

That is, if the freakin' son-in-law brings it back.......................................................Pot Likker never returns anything.
