What to buy? MS460 or MS660?

Unless you cut 30" timber or bigger most of the time, then you may need a 660. If not then a 460 will be more saw than you'll ever need. I use a 70cc saw (ported 372xpw) for all of my timber falling. I regularly cut trees that are 30" or more with no problems. Even before it was ported. I had a 660 and just never used it. I traded it for another 70cc saw.

It just takes ALOT of big timber to justify the added weight of a 660 IMO. Run one all day and the weight really wears on you. You'll be surprised at how well a 460 can pull a 28" full comp bar and chain in hardwood.

Have you checked out the 461? Most are saying it feels more powerful than the 460. Thats what I'd be buying if I needed another felling saw right now.

441 mtronic is a better choice than 461 IMO- with the 441 mtron you get auto tone and spring AV mounts with the 461 you get neither... and scarificing a couple of ccs is well worth the above benefits. Easier on you and better production

I ran a 441-CM for several months, but recently got a new 461. Of the two saws, I'd strongly recommend the 461. The 461 is clearly more powerful for about the same weight. I do think M-tronic has some benefits, but there's no substitute for extra cc.

As far as vibration and comfort, if there is any difference between the two saws, I really only notice it at idle. At cutting speed, the 461 is quite smooth and I really don't notice any extra vibes. The 461 revs very freely and responsively, and really cruises through wood at full throttle. It's got a throatier exhaust note than the 441-CM (stock mufflers) and just sounds meaner in the cut.

Yes indeed, welcome. Intended use (typical type and size of wood) would make suggestions more useful.[/QU

I'm mostly in the pine but will stop the pine to get the oak on site! and every one cutting wood from slash piles with they're small saws all ways leave the big stuff that's easy to get so I want the big saw to get the big easy wood. Though I know the 034 av super running a 25" bar going any bigger there is not an option already pushing it as it is.

Go for the 660.
TOTALLY AGREE! O.P the slight extra weight you mentioned, is a trade off, for torque. You will adjust and get used to it. When I first got my 660 I had to get used to the slight increase, only took a couple weeks, then the smaller saws sat.

I own the 441CM. I do love that saw and do recommend it to the OP. But some people don't like the m-tron. Some don't like the sponginess of spring AV either. It's hard to say that one is better than the other. Thats all a matter of opinion. IMO, the 441CM is better too. But the 461 most likely has more power and weighs the same. That goes a long ways to someone making a living with their saw. It's really just, "what flavor you prefer?"

I'll take either over the 660 though, for an all around timber saw. The weight difference has always made a difference to me, and I'm 6'4" 280. :D I guess there's been bigger weiners than me born though. :D

I thought the weight would be a issue as well but after the first 100 foot vertical climb with it everything else seemed easier and I found myself using my 066 more often because of the extra torque in the big wood, but than again I do enjoy cutting with my McCulloch SP81 and I am pretty sure it is heavier than the 066, something to be said of a big torquey saw.

It has never been a problem for me either. I worked with an 066 and then a 660 for years. I just found that I could find that same power in a lighter package, and that made my day easier. Just have to get them ported. :D I would still have the 660 if I had needed it. I just never used it anymore because I could drop any tree I came to with my ported 372xpw. Usually don't run into anything over 40", and most are 20"-25". If they were all over 30" then I would definetly still have my 660. It's a great saw to have, but not if it's your only saw IMO. I definetly do love the 660 though. It's a heck of a saw to run.

Get the 461 and send it to the Monkeye you won't regret it.

The 461 is stronger with no mods over a 460 muffler modded. The 461 will be my next new saw.

I have a 660 muffler modded only that I used today to drop some trees but only becuase the my Monkeyed 460 was on its way back to me:hmm3grin2orange:

I like the 460 better than any saw I own. It is my go to saw. 461 would be even better.

how come when i research the 461 not much comes up about it and the Stihl website doesn't list it??? is it available in CA?

If you don't get the 660 you will always wonder, "I wonder how a 660 would be in this tree"? Get the 660 and don't look back.

Steve

If you are considering getting it ported get the 460 or 461. They respond great to mods and will out cut a stock 660. If you want something with power real close to a 660 with 460 weight then get a 390xp/2188:potstir:.
