Much as it pains me, I guess any future business with my fine Canadian friends is going to be severely curtailed courtesy of the United States Postal service.

Just sold a saw to a fine member up in Ontario Canada, but didn't think the deal was going to go through after I found out how much they raised the price of shipping to there.

I have shipped there before, cant remember how long ago, maybe within the last year and I thought it was like $50. I checked the other day and found that Priority is now the least expensive way and it now cost me 101.20 to ship a saw to Ontario with $300 insurance. :msp_ohmy:

I know the Canucks don't like UPS because of brokerage fees but now were pretty much screwed. Are the brokerage fees paid by the recipient after it arrives in Canada or is that included in the up front UPS cost?

The reason I ask is now according to UPS.com, they are now cheaper to me to ship to the same place in Canada I just shipped this saw to.

So to all my Canadian friends, I'm sorry but this really changes things....

You get dinged the brokerage at the door, no real telling what the cost is until it gets to you

I have a US address just for that, actually a lot of people around here do.

I sent a "parts saw" to to your neck of the woods and it was $75 with adequate insurance. Canada Post is really no better.

Customs brokers are the greatest single impediment to international trade there is. don't ask me how I know.....

I haven't had a saw shipped from the US for a few months, but that seems like a big jump....Last one was about $65.

UPS is definitely a disaster....They sock it to us when they arrive at the doorstep.

It is what it is, Mark. USPS is the way to go, but everyone will have to decide if the shipping is worth the deal.

When the Boston marathon bombings took place, they buckled down on security and the prices went up. That's what I was told by my post office anyways. I was also told that the taxes paid in Canada when using ups is based on a percentage of the stated value.

How often do we hear this type of excuse?
The only explosive chainsaws we are likely to see are the Chicom knock offs.

Its no secret that the US postal system is a mismanaged mess and has been for some time.

I don't want to get into all the details because it's something we can only squawk about and I know it's not good business to deliver goods at a loss, but doubling your customers cost of service to them will not increase the bottom line when you drive off even more of the business that you are trying to increase to stay in business.

I cringe every time I'm forced to ship a saw or parts USPS anyway since the do such a poor job to begin with as there damage rate is not good, they have no real package tracking system and there insurance is nothing more then a scam.

I guess it will now just come down to how much less a seller will take for a sale and how bass someone wantssomething

Heck, a man won't even be able to give a parts saw away now for the price of shipping. ...

It used to be not that long ago that if it was shipped USPS, the most extra we'd pay when it got here would be a $5 brokerage fee - and maybe sales tax (varies by province, 15% here), depending on I don't know what, but usually not. Sometimes yes & sometimes no on the tax. If it was shipped UPS, it was a crap shoot on how much they'd want when they showed up at your door with it - but if it was less than $50 you were lucky. So using USPS was a no-brainer.

Now, I'm not so sure. The last couple things I got shipped to me from the US were sent UPS (or other courier), and there was no charge when they got here - but there was quite a bit more up front cost on the sender end. Seemed they were doing all the brokerage/tax things up front now? So maybe UPS is not as bad as it was now compared to USPS.

Either way it sucks for everybody...

Just a few weeks back I had a saw shipped to me from british columbia and it only cost 53 bucks I believe. It must be nice though to just raise the price whenever you feel like it.

Do any of the other carriers do better (DHL, FedEx, ???)

I know for one thing I get USA to Aus, DHL are amazing in price (and service?). It is dry food though.

aww.............
come on guys............
it's just another fine example of what "spreading the wealth" looks like.........
you'll get used to it and then everything will seem normal again..........
kinda like gas @ near 4 bucks a gallon.......

What everyone has to remember is the up front cost of shipping, is only part of the equation....Unfortunately there is an international border between us and ALL couriers UPS, Fedex, etc. broker shipments "in house" at the border, and charge for their services.....USPS and Canada Post include the brokerage in their price (other than a $5 handling fee, that is hit and miss if they ever charge it).

We Canadians have a federal sales tax as well as a Provincial sales tax in some provinces on virtually everything we buy and Canada post is supposed to collect that on all items we buy out of any other country.....Having said that, I can't remember the last time I had to pay any tax on anything that came in the mail, and I get a lot of stuff shipped to me..It's very hit and miss. I have been 100% raped by UPS consistently though.

There is one other thing I've been noticing. USPS is telling customers that packages over a certain weight MUST be shipped "Priority".......I have a feeling that's what happened with Mark's shipment. Maybe things have changed, but it used to be anything could be shipped up to 60 pounds "Expesspost" which still has insurance and tracking...........I think either things are changing, or there are a lot of untrained USPS employees, that don't know that there are other options.

for what it is worth

There is a process where you self-clear shipments from the US. I did this when I ordered $60 worth of BBQ parts from Florida and UPS wanted $70 in assorted brokerage fees (actual shipping fee was prepaid). You go to an identified CBSA office with the required documentation and pay the sale tax. You are then issued a release form that states your package has cleared Customs and UPS will then have to release it to you. A little time consuming but very satisfying when you wave bye-bye to UPS
