It's funny you ask about this because i just took a saw into the basement tonight. My garage got broken into just before thanksgiving and i figured the low life scum might try to come back hopeing i replaced the ones they took. I was gonna go downstairs and give it a sniff test here in a bit.

Bingo...my dad got his saws stolen from a locked garage also...

Fire codes generally cannot be enforced within a residence. You want to store gasoline in your bedroom... a fire marshal can't stop you.

Gasoline has a very low flash point (FP) and a very low lower explosive limit (LEL). However, the smell is so potent that you would probably become sick and driven out of the house before reaching both FP & LEL. And then, there has to be a source of ignition.

A LOT of things have to line up in order for you to burn your house down by storing chainsaws indoors with fuel in them. If it were easy... saw shops would be blowing up everywhere......hourly.

I know, I know, someone had a cousin who had a friend that new a guy that had an uncle that blew his house up because his flippy caps leaked.....

I have kept saws in the basement for years to work on them where its warm and to keep them warmer when going out to cut in winter weather.........no issues.
Carry them in the cab of the truck---store em in the utility room etc, etc. Never had any bad leakers and never had any problems related with doing this. My 2 cents.

Hmmmmm...interesting thought for me. I live in a "studio", basically 1 room for bed and "living room" plus a bathroom. sq. Total is under 275 ft. I have been living with my saws in my room for 2 years now. Both have a case and I have stored them full of gas and empty. Never smelled gas once. No leaks on the floor. Never really been concerned. Unfortunately I do not have a garage or shop to store them in. It is either inside with me or outside in rain/snow/heat/moisture/etc...

Need to think more about this one, thanks for the food for thought.

I don't know. My experience, is that anything with gasoline; should be kept out of the house.

In this area most people hat their homes with natural gas, heating oil, coal/wood, pellets; most anything that requires a flame. BUT: almost daily, in the Winter, there is a news story of a house fire, usually a total loss fire, attributed to spilled fuel, fumes, etc.

It is just too easy for something to happen. And with an external fuel source; it can happen quickly.

Well, since the thieves raided the barn one night and I lost a lot of saws, my remaining running saws are in the house, because that's it, security and no garage. No fuel in them though.

In your situation I wouldn't worry about it, they have to go where you live, I would just drain them before bringing in.

It gets really cold here in the winter and my garage is not heated yet. So I use my basement as a workshop. Yes the gas fumes get quite overwhelming at times but never a fire or explosion...... so far. I occasionally turn on the clothes dryer to evacuate fumes (air dry) if my wonderful wife isn't already using it.

I keep mine in the garage of a split foyer. I have no place to store them outside so until I build a shop they're there. Been there 3 years so far and keep anywhere from 1-10 gallons of gas there.

I'm currenly storing my saws in my dining room. They don't smell. And, believe me, I'd know it (I have a good sniffer).
Once I finish a certain room in the basement, they will go there when not in use.

Good thing that you moved them into the garage.

I don't store my STIHL machines with fuel in them. Not even in my garage / shop. The gas water heater is there, and knowing that, I take precautions.

You don't store them in the garage but you start them in there.

I actually currently live in a house with no garage. Our old house had a huge garage which was nice. I currently have a room in our house which is mine only. Total of 16 saws in there right now along with my generators, pressure washer, tank of argon with welder, gun cabinet with many boxes of rounds. Most of them have mix in them. None of them leak and there is no fuel smell whatsoever and trust me, if there was a smell, i would be hearing about it from the wife. I'm sure some would call my current "shop" a bomb but i even use a torch in there sometimes with no problems You gotta do what you gotta do and be smart about it as to avoid having problems. If it did smell like fuel i wouldn't do anything which could light a fire, vent room well, and investigate where the smell is coming from to correct it. No way in hell are my saws gonna sit outside at risk of walking away and no way in hell will i sell them just because i have no place to put them. I've been talking about selling this place with the wife though. I need me a garage. Was also thinking of just buying a nice large cargo trailer and turning it into a nice mobil shop with all the power hook ups i need. I'm working on it. Had a shop planned last summer but with moving up in the air i don't wanna build one only to move.

Umm......I do store them in my garage / shop. I just don't do it with fuel in them.

And yes, I've been known to fire up one or two every now and then when I get bored. Last time I did, I made a couple hundred dollars cause a neighbor saw me.
