What's the differences between a 288 and a 288 Lite? Are all Lites without the spring in the front, and all non-Lites have the spring? Can the spring be removed to be like those without that spring, or is it made entirely different? What's more desirable? Yes, I'm a 288 rookie:)

Ill be watching this... dont know much about them either. I have one headed my way right now, with a toasted top end. Any info will be welcome.

i own a standard 288 so can't elaborate on the differences between the lite vs the standard, i do know the front spring can be easily removed or added, i used a 281/288 spike/spring assy on one of my 181's with no issues................

The big spring and high top filter is the regular version. The lite doesn't have the spring and has the low top. Top ends are the same besides the early KS non decomp cylinders. They will make insane compression with machine work. The spring can be removed no problem.

Some came with rear spring av mounts as well. I swapped my rubber mounts out for the spring and vibrations were cut down and made the saw smoother.

288 is on my hit list....can't sleep properly til l get one...can the builders chime in and tell us what the differences are between 288 & 390xp.....Are cylinder port timing and designs the same....exhaust too high?.....carb

The 288 has a hell of lot tougher bottom end than either the 372, 385, or 390......but they ain't quad port motors. Out of all of them, I can make the 385 the very strongest.

288 has better port timing to start with. They'll make real strong runners pretty easily. No 288 in jonsered. If you get rid o the big spring use the rubber av. The springs will be too flimsy and will hit the travel limiters and vibrate more.
The 281 actually makes more compression stock than a 288 but suffers from less displacement. If you look at the 281 and 288 jugs side by side, the combustion chamber for the 281 is half again smaller.
If the 288 had come with quad transfers, it would be the best 80-90cc saw ever made.

It's getting a bit off topic but how does an 064 stihl stack up to a 288, comperable saws from same time period,(and i have an 064 but no 288).
