Harley. Check the serial numbers on the two new saws. Are they valid? That's the bottom line. This Stihl support number may still be in use:

1-800-610-6677

If so, tell them the serial number and what you ran into.
I don't register them either. We used to grab a name out of the phone book, but that got old. The serial number would
come up, with the model, just shown as not sold yet.

Many dealers do not stock the ms170 anymore, which is why I had my source order a box of two for me, and to my surprise, they are now different.

Which is the topic of this thread....

yep,, thats because they cant get them anymore,, if you find a dealer with one now you will be lucky,, ther eis several dealers around here and they only have the 171,, jake says the 171 is identical to the 170,, and i may be wrong here but i think he said the 171 has the fully adjustable carb,, like i said dont quote me on that

The weird thing is, Why would Stihl go to the expense of changing some of the parts on an older model, which they will likely soon phase out?
I don't know..........

I won't....

i wouldnt mind having a couple more of the 170's but then ones i find are beat to crap and they want new prices,, for me the 170 is ideal because of the weight

Here is a ms171, which I part out as well...
Quite different..View attachment 475045
i never seen one,, just heard about them,,your right there is a big difference in them,,, i have a 170 that i really like,, would never sell it since one of the members here gave it to me,,,,, i might have to see about getting a 171 in the very near future,, is the carb full adjustable on it or was i wrong???
