Ben might be busy but he always was very prompt in answering all my questions until he recieved my money at that point it was always much harder to get any answers. In my opinion that is not the way to treat customers.

I sent Ben an 066 in early August, to get new cylinder, piston and modification. He said he didn't have any work and the saw would go right on his bench and be back in 1 week. Well, I got it back end of December or beginning of January. I started the saw and let it idle, my new dealer installed choke/kill switch no longer "killed" the motor, so I then went to pulled the plug wire and noticed the park plug was only in by about two threads. It does run like a striped a$$ ape. The saw did not have the Maxi Flow air cleaner installed like I asked for. For months, I was tolded this saw, was either done or "done and shipped" most every week for literally months, LOL.

I also, sent him an 084 for new cylinder, piston and modification, in August and order 30inch GB bar, two 24inch GB bars, 28inch GB bar, two 30inch chains and Maxi Flow air cleaners for the 066 and 084.

I also, sent him just the motor from a 3 week old 660 that got smashed by a worker. I asked him to rebuild it into something that would run.............replace the parts and so forth. I still havn't recieved this saw and it has been several months?!?!??!!?!

I got the 084 about two weeks ago (middle of January), never have started it because the 30 inch chains that he sent to fit the 30 inch bar he sent are one link too short and they won't go onto the sprocket. My other 084 bars and chains are in Wisconsin and I havn't had a chance to get them back home.

I am a logger and needed these saws up and running quickly, this did not happen as Ben said it would. I went out and purchased new saws to replace, because we had work that need to get done. Twice maybe did he return a phone call, one maybe did he return an email, and believe me with me prepaying over $1,000 and him having about $2,000 of my saws for several months, I called him a lot and emailed him a lot.............I am still worried I won't get my 660 back.

Some of you have been waiting for about 1 or 2 months, big deal, I've been waiting for upwards of 6 months, LOL.

That is my Ben Olsen experience. Ben my saw had better be in the mail, fixed or not, I want it back NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So........what exactly did happen to your sponsorship???

I bought a bar and some chains off Ben. He even honed a cylinder for me. This was back around August. Bar and chains showed promptly, prices were very reasonable, and the cylinder hone was a freebie. My experience was positive. It sounds to me like Ben has simply bitten off more than he can chew, is extrememly bogged down and disorganized, and has made the mistake of not being upfront and honest with many of his customers. Growing pains I guess. And to those of you who pay for muffler mods, you have no business running a chainsaw if you don't own a hand drill and a round chain file...believe it or not, that is all you need to do a muffler mod.

Trimmed, I sent the payment before this thread and after searching for post on how Ben's work was. I called him on the phone and talked for awhile about what I wanted. I was orginally going to send my 029 for a woods port. After talking to him, he said that the engine design would not fully benefit from a woods port. A muffler mod would be fine for it.

Now Ben telling me(a person who knows nothing about making a saw faster) that he would rather not take my $250 and port the 029 because it will not fully benefit means something. I'm sure it will be faster than a stock saw but why spend the $ when it can go towards a bigger pro saw.

I now have a 044 that I would like to be faster. I see Ben as the underdog trying to get started. I know Dean does great work with less complaints but I wanted to give Ben a try. I have pizzed off people before and it comes to a point where some can't be satisfied. I agree with all who have posted that he has been too busy.......I know the feeling.:dizzy:

OK, ben has been busy, too busy perhaps. In fact he's so busy, people are not getting their stuff for months. So what is the deposit for? Why does he need a deposit and what did you gain by sending one? That's what I don't get.

So you can get locked in on a sale price........

Ahhh..........I see. So for the payment part of the deal and to lock in the "sale" price, there is a "time is of the essence" emphasis, but for the scheduled work being completed in a timely manner that does not seem to apply.

OK, now I get it. :censored:

The sale was $200 for a woods port, which is a really good price and $50 off Ben's usual price. It was just during the last half of Jan or so. Time is not of the essence for me, in fact I can't even mail the saw in question until April (when I get back to Alaska), and in fact we never even discussed turnaround times. But a sale is a sale, and typically has a specified end date. So far Ben has been prompt in answering my emails.

Yes, you can do a hack muffler mod with a drill and a round file, but does everyone have a tig or mig welder laying around to do a nice deflector on the new hole? No. This isn't the point anyway of the thread anyway. If I wanted to buy a fresh steaming turd from him and he lied repeatedly about ship dates the the issue at hand would be the same.

Zemmo, I believe $200 is Big Dave's standard price unless he's raised it since last summer so it's not such a huge bargain, especially if you're waiting months and months for your saw.

Good luck,
Ian

im still alive. those mufflers went out this morning via overnight delivery. tried to get them out yesterday but i had missed the DHL cutoff for pickup. tracking number and all was supplied to him.. my website is still going strong and im still in business.

Sounds reasonable, lets see what happens...

Charley: you are mistaken on a few things. but i do admit that this situation was a complete breakdown. your mufflers are scheduled for wed by 10:30am so it is done. if you consider this a lie that is your own choice..

Again, lets see how it turns out.

Definitely back peddeling now, and no real explanation for any of the negative posts from his CUSTOMERS

Charley still hasnt received his mufflers.

WTH? Can anyone confirm this?
Charley?

Have some integrity man and be honest!
Either you sent the stuff out or you didn't. Most people are understanding if you give them the truth and real answers instead of bs.
Did you offer Charley a refund as he says you did?
If you did offer him the refund You should suck it up and give it to him!
Geeze.
Thats just my take on it.

i received word from Charly that he got in contact with DHL and they said it was "misrouted" this one falls on DHL.

I have not received the muffler, but that is not on Ben. He shipped them as he said he would, but DHL mis-routed them. They are supposed to be here today, but with the way my luck has been running lately, I will reserve judgment until they are in my hands.

Ben,

On an other note, I would like to give you a little bit of business advice. I own two different successful businesses, so am probably qualified to give at least some rudimentary advice.

Under promise and over deliver. Exceeding your customers' expectations in never a bad thing.

If delays are going to happen (and they will in every business), communicate the issue before the customer asks about it. Up front and honest communication avoids nearly all delay problems.

Had you just told me what was going on, and at least responded to my inquiries, I would have never said a word, even if it took more time. In fact, I would have sent you more work. Heck, even if you had sent the mufflers out two weeks ago, when you said you would, I would have been fine.

I do not see eye to eye with Ben for the most part and not a big fan because of some of our history, but I think you guys need to lay off a little, especially those who have never dealt with him directly. It is obvious that there a few on here that are out to smear him for no other reason then you have your noses up another builders ars. You have already humiliated him and your points were made. To keep at this is nothing more than harassment and the moderators need to put an end to it.
This is not to say that people who have dealt with him directly should not have the right to voice themselves but those who have not need to back off a little.

Look every business has it's problems. I have had my share and most every one else who starts a business has them and it is a learning experience. I say let it go and and let him start fresh. I bet this will make a big change in NWCS.
