Wasn’t sure if you were referring to my post or in general. I was just saying that some gtg saws are beyond a standard woods port.

I sent him a email a couple weeks ago about his port work price on a saw I have. He sent me a email back saying he picks and chooses who he decides to do business with. He asked me if I was trying my hand at porting and I told him I was interested in it but don't have the correct tooling to do so. He sent me a email back saying he doesn't want to port a saw for someone try g to learn to port. I figured business is business but whatever.

Now I keep getting youtube recommendations for his videos.

I mostly get recommendations for Buckin Billy Ray, afleetcommand and mweba1 when it comes to chainsaw and felling videos, which I don't mind. The latter two do a lot of 562XP builds, which is right up my alley, as I just picked up a parts saw project to rebuild.

Sounds insecure.

Don't know if you check out logger Wade but his sidekick Stevie Billow sent him a 460 and i believe it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 to do the work to it. Had over a grand in it all together with shipping both ways. Not sure how he got him to do the work either as he( Billow) had done a couple saws himself.

That doesn't even seem right. Maybe a grand with the cost of the saw included. That would be very believable.

What does a new 460 cost anyways, $700? Shipping to the left coast and back is $40-50. So if the port job is $300 you're in it for over a grand. You can hit a grand easilly with a cheaper saw too. I think i paid $550 fpr my Jonsered 2159. Port job was $300 and included return shipping. I had to pay to send it south. So, $850 plus the $40 shipping to Coddle Ln.

May have been a 461. All i know is Jack thinks very highly of his port work. I don't care so much for his latest videos of how much rpm he's turning his saws. His older stuff i do like and it looks like his stuff runs hard. I thinks there's some talk on a thread here about how much he charges. Anyhow not trying to bash or anything, just explain myself.

You're correct that it doesn't sound right. But, from what I've seen it's the truth. He's got several "levels" of performance work. Insanoized, psychoised, super psycho, I can't remember. They all sound the same to me. Anyway, the base level was like $400 or 450 and the top level was like $750-800. I don't know what any of the levels mean, but none of them was a race saw or anything. As another member pointed out, a two piece head and pipe is in the $800 range, so chatting that for a port job is nuts. And no those prices do not include shipping. PS: my info comes from @redbull660 who emailed him to inquire about a port job.

On the other hand this is America, and at last check I think we generally encourage free market practices, often at the expense of the consumer and the environment. Maybe Jack could do 100 port jobs a year at $300 or 50 at $800. If you had the choice, which would you do? Yeah, some chainsaw ninjas on the forums might talk some crap, but what does he care? He's getting paid. It's up to the customer to do their due diligence when figuring out who to do business with.

Great post Ryan. I agree while he may be making shady videos to drum up business, there is nothing that is saying he is doing a shabby job at porting. There are a lot of self appointed, self righteous "saw builder police" scouring social media as well as certain other saw builder's groupies that most definitely would be all over him if he started putting out bad saws.....

And the perceived value is in the eye of the beholder. I know guys who will do porting for 100 bucks but you need to do the muffler mod and timing advance. The regular well known builders charge $250-350 and you pretty much know what you are going to get. I guess if a guy wants to spend $800 bucks to get a little more out of his saw then let him.

He told me if it's a used saw you goes right through it and replaces parts as the saw needs and all of that is extra. He wouldn't give me a price and straight up asked me what I thought it should cost and he wasn't trying to be the cheapest in the business. At that point I was no longer interest in his work. Not that I think he does bad work or anything I just wasn't sure what I'd be getting for a high price

When people act like that, it tells me they are fishing you out to see how much they can sock you for. Also if someone is asking a ton of questions like that it usually means they are setting up "outs" for themselves in the event that you do not like the final price or the finished product. IE they can go back and say "well I asked you ... and you said..."
