In close to forty years of living on a farm the last five is the first we haven't had a dog around. Our last one was a brown lab that was eighteen years old when she passed. One of these days we need to go dog shopping. Nice post.
Very nice reply. Sorry for your loss of your Lab.
We may save one from the pound after this one is gone.

know what you all mean. our youngest. Norwegian Elkhound. (male, 4 yrs old, pix taken yesterday evening.) yeasterday in late afternoon i was cutting up some firewood and he had just come back from a walk. i was busy and did not notice 'my audience'. @John T super cab my buddy Yance, Australian shepherd, does the same thing, unless he is more concerned with being right next to me, he is a nut, he got mold poisoning when he was about 4 months old, not sure how, it messed up his equilibrium and he hurt his back from the convulsions, he is funny as hell though, he falls down trying to shake himself and runs into stuff all the time, I am not sure how many times he has crashed into the side of the truck coming out to greet me as I pull in. He is a great dog and is very protective of my daughter, but oh man does he do some funny stuff, I don't know how many times I've watched him fall over trying to pee, he pretty much just squats now.

The best times I have had in quite some time or many years. I have a timber project that is closed to the public that is several hours from civilization. Very much wildlife where as the Mule Deer seem to accept me and dwell around my camp. The bears stay away more but come to check camp out none the less. My guard dog does not allow any thing including a mouse from getting close with out making a huge racket. The Mountain Lion concerns me but ""Sandy" does not tolerate uninvited guests. I get set up in my shelter and stay for a few weeks at a time. Very very pleasant. I do not seem to have time to get lonely. Thanks

My kind of life, seriously.

@clint53 & @Jere39 : Nice looking companions and some really nice looking firewood! I gather my wood by myself (no dog, we've got cats and they're not into firewood). Wife helps out running the splitter now and then. Damn near kills me as it eliminates the minor breathers while the cylinder cycles.
I know your pain. My wife sometimes runs the splitter and I move to wood to and from the splitter.
I can't keep up with my wife in any way.
It's down right embarrassing if I take her with me to the shooting range.
