On the 044 I have it was just screaming with the Walkerized dual port only set at 11,800 rpm. Plan is to also install the stihl front cover & run screens on all 3 exhaust ports. Because we have 10 % ethaol in the fuel will make final set at around 13,000 -13,400 at 92 octane is the best we get here unless you doctor it with Toulene . Hi. 45:1 ultra. Goggle : How to make rocket fuel for our cars. :chainsaw:

Good, you have already saved an hours work in making your saw have a little more umph.

I remove the baffles in every saw I mod.

I have been laughing out loud at Wojo's mufflers for months now. I wonder why - buy the Stihl brand they are the best and the price is fair - thats why there are no other aftermarket faceplates.

How do you cut the baffels out?

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have to ask a question.... I am assembling an 044 from a box of 044 rubbish and here is the muffler I have to work with. It has no baffles in it, but check out the outlet....are they kidding? Its itty-bitty! I also took a shot of the spark arrestor...I'm not averse to them, but it is an AWFULLY fine screen. Any comments on installing a more coarse screen?

I guess I'm going to hog the outlet out a bit and yank the screen or find a more coarse replacement.

That's the current outlet on the MS440. It still develops the rated HP... Dremel if out if you like (PITA) to 5/8...

The screen is fine... many times the area of the outlet.

How do you cut the baffels out?

The 460 and the 660 have different baffle systems, but I use the same method on them both. I drill the spot welds, and with a carbide burr I grind where the baffle is against the muffler. Once ground down I put the muffler in a vise and with a big pair of Channel Locks I pry on the baffleuntil it comes off (easily) and the I smooth out whats left inside and I am good to go.

Hmm,I sit scratching my head wondering where in the world old Scott wandered off to.I'm even more baffled as to why he thought I needed help installing the front of a muffler.I know I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer but honestly I'm not that ignorant. I mean, gee wizz I do have the fastest mini Mac in the world, that has to account for something.:biggrinbounce2:

Not a good idea if you want to cut on public land...Trust me there. Seen people held responsible for a 16,000 acre wildfire for not running a spark arrestor. Doesn't matter that it was the heat directly off the muffler that started it, only that they didn't have required equipment to run a small engine on public land.

You can use a round file and hog out that outlet. It's a pain at first, because of where the port is, but once you get it started, it goes pretty quick. Usually about 5 minutes of work, and it'll be nice and big. You can take it out big enough so that the outer hole is as big as the opening for the spark arrestor.

Now here is another thing.I've seen well meaning people cut and alter and stick holes all over the place in the muffler cover.Looked like a piece of Swiss cheese. Then after a period of time they melt the plastic shrouds etc. right off the saw.Now what did that accomplish?

Further more I've seen some with the little pipe thingy that blew the danged chips right back in a persons face, again not especialy a good trait. You have to put some thought into this stuff other than thinking you are going to enter the saw in the local rod and custom show. You could go bonkers and chrome plate the danged muffler but I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut it wouldn't run any better.

Good point I have seen some muffler mods that are no more than mere holes. Now you would not run out and drill holes in your trucks muffler would you? These things do need some fore thought!

Will an earlier model 044 muffler work on a later 440?

My muffler on my 044 has the stock "Big" outlet. A dual port really wasn't needed for me. :)

Gary

My 044 project came with the stock "big" outlet muffler. So my getting the DP cover for my saw was not needed? Or will it help it more?
