some of those real-life Alaskan adventure tales really will make a man go
like the AK bushman making trail all day with his dogs. finally gets them bedded down for the night... and tucks into his roll. the sweat, etc transfers... and in the morning he is frozen solid inside... and high temps for the day not expected to be above -15f! now the good nite's sleep is a life or death situation! or...
the bush pilots trying to start their engines on planes on skis. spl tent and heat, etc... just to get the engine and oil into specs so that engine will crank and not ruin itself!! solo back country on skis and ruin an engine is a death certificate! or (this one still haunts me...)
bushman is running hard. time schedule. 12 dog team. loaded with supplies. headed up country. ez hiway is the frozen river...
finishes up his dinner and visit at friend's remote cabin, harnesses up his dogs... yalping, etc to get on the git-go... bids farewell and the never ending sun ducks to a low light... and off he charges... Mush, you huskies... Mush! come gee!!... deep snow, so runs a bit on river's edge, then onto the ice. better now, smoother running. not so deep, the snow that is. his friend sees him heading out, getting smaller... hopes for the best for him... then
"crack-k!..."
team hits a soft spot, ice breaks and down into river and under the ice they all go! no noise, just a sudden cold silence! a total emptiness! gone... all gone in a flash!
and no hope for a rescue!
... just like that, just gone!
' come gee, lets take the frozen river.... '
