thats a nice looking pointer, Is he trained pretty well?

There all trained very well. I use to run dogs in navhda. I was also a gundog judge in navhda. I love to chuckar hunt and shorthairs seem to be top notch for those birds.

I actually had a husky that loved to come in the woods with me. He would sit and watch as I cut and loaded the truck. Then When I would drive back to the house he would grab a small log or stick in his mouth and bring it back. The first time he did it I almost ran the truck off the trail watching him in the mirror. I Gave him a deer leg, a chocolate chip cookie(his favorite) and a belly scratching for his hard work. From then on out he always brought 1 log back every trip. He had to be put down this summer as his hips gave out, but he lived a good life. I still sometimes expect to see him when I shut off the saw and look around.

Sorry to hear about having him put down. That would be hard.

Durn Ray,

Sorry about your dog. Mine is still young but I dred the day. He is my wood cutting partner and fearless protector ole Jake. Sad story, did you get another dog?

My Spaniel, 15 yrs. old, would always accompany me to the woods and sit a respectfully safe distance away to watch me cut.

Bout 4 years ago I had a small spruce that needed some extra pushin by hand. So I shut off the saw and my wife and I pushed. Watching it fall and realized that "Jake" was right in it's path. I screamed and he heard and saw the tree at the same time and jumped outta the way like super dog.. No physical harm done. But since then, if he sees me pick up a saw, running or not, he heads to the house door. Poor guy got so spooked.

I've taken him approx. 1 1/2 miles away in the pick up. As soon as he sees me gettin the saw out of the back of the truck he is gone to home. No amt. of talking and coaxing helps. I don't take him anymore. But when I used to after this incident, and saw him trotting on home, I would yell to him. He would stop and turn to me with a real hurt look in his eyes.....then turn and continue homeward.

Lesson: When the saw was running he knew to stay away. This time the saw stopped and he assumed, as always, that all was well, and unknown to us came over to the falling path. Wife and I, only paying attention to pushing tree, and not him.

This is one of my Goldens, her sire is "Chipper" (Ch Amberac's Yer Chips R Taykin, SDHF). Chipper was the #1 Golden in the country in 2001 (in conformation). She has the best temperament of any dog that I have ever had. She is sort of an adventurer / entrepreneur and a complete tomboy.

She loves big noisy tools and stuff. We have lots of thunderstorms here in the summer and she doesn't even notice the thunder.

She also brings in firewood - and gets paid in cookies. Sometimes she works overtime but I don't pay time and a half...well, until she looks at me with those BIG brown eyes.

Here the "new dog" - Buddy... 16 weeks....

It's our neighbors new dog, but we get him 80% of the time, pay no bills, and do the training.

Right now he's not much use, unless it cleaning up spilled food..

That's the kind of dog deal to die for !
80 % of the good stuff ...
And 0% of the :censored:

R.I.P. Winston...

Andy, I know of that pain and it just SUCKS. A few years ago we had a Golden that was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis when she was just 10 months old. We did our very, very best to manage her disease and give her a shot at life, but four months later we had to let the beautiful baby girl go.

Bailey, even at that young age was learning to ride a skateboard and do all kinds of other cool stuff. She is probably entertaining Winston right now.

Losing a dog is just damm tough on me. My german shorthair that started my kennel was named booker and I keep him in my thoughts all the time. Spoiledboys Booker went on to become one of the top 50 shorthairs in the us and canada. Our last hunt was only about 1 hour that was all he could go anymore. The rest of the day we just sat in the truck and shared lunch. I remember that hunt the most. 2 months later he past away in his sleep. God I loved that dog.

Well thanks, I probally should have left the end of the story off and just spoke of how he would follow me back with a small log. To answer your question I have a young German shepard that is awesome in every way except when the saw starts she is heading back to the house.

Here was the prior guy, just as I like to remember him...

Great pic and awesome dog lake, It seems your dog was a lot like mine was. It makes me smile to think maybe they are both in dog heaven chewing on wood listening to the southing sound of an 066.

The Jakester would be upset if I didn't reply to this thread. You can see him in his element here, ready to rumble. Unfortunately he doesn't like the saws much. Or the compressor. Or anything else that doesn't resemble a couch, bed, small varmit or food. He sort of likes me if I can offer one of the previous four items. His taste in couches could be better though.
