I believe the role was square ground chisel chain. That's what's on my 045. The funky safety chain was what they made the chain for Rob's 60" bar with. They made it from several smaller loops he got on clearance. I'm pretty sure there was only the one role. Help us out here Bill.

Yep, Brad's right on that one, only one roll. The other was boxed loops that he broke and put together.

Ian

Square is indeed faster if you are in clean green wood.If you are bucking downed firewood it's not the answer. It will zip right through about a half dozen cuts then dull so fast you would swear you hit a rock.

I've got a couple of 36" loops for the big saws but I seldom use it .

To answer or clear up a few questions. Yes there was only the one roll 100'. The long bar was made from 4 individual boxes of 3/8 safety chain Rob bought and drop shipped to me.
Ian, to the best of my knowledge there was no cotton wood in the pile only oak, cherry, ash,elm and maple. I remember you were wanting to start cutting it up for firewood and I somehow got destracted and it didn't happen. Come on back and we'll:chainsaw: finish it up LOLOLOLOL. From now through the rest of winter I'll be cuttin alot of firewood and I'll use the square chain and give you guys a report on how well it holds up and how it does on a round ground resharp. Me Jeff and Earl go on some pretty good firewwod missions. On a day when the ground is frozen and the weather is nice we'll get up early and head out for the day all loaded up,2 tractors, wagon, trailer, and 2 splitters. I really enjoy those days. If it ever stops raining here this week I'll be cuttin a few miles from me to take down some trees for Jeff. I'll use the new chain.

Bill, have a look at the big log on top that I cut a few rounds out of. That is the one I was talking about. It was just a bit more than the 18"er could get through. I'm curious to know what that was now.

Ian

Hey Ian. Take the compliment that gives to your saw and run with it. That was dry scaley bark Hickory and your saw cut through it like butter, wink, wink:cheers: Seriously, I think that's just how much difference a good chain makes. I believe it WAS the combination of your saw and good chain, not soft wood.

That was dry scaley bark Hickory

Now I'm about as bad as a person could be at tree ID but I know it wasn't hickory.... LOL

I went from there to the 15" ash that was the last cookie log and there was a marked difference in cut speed from one to the other.

Ian

Ian, I went out to look and the log you cut into a couple of times but not all the way through is a maple and it looks solid on the end. So dude you just got one mean saw there that all there is to it. Got me wondering about what to buy. The guy Kevin put me onto has a 346XP ready to go but your 372 is sure sweet. Oh Choices choices!

Maple...sweet...

I'm ordering a loop of RC skip for the 28" bar to see how it cuts compared to the SC skip. I had a few loops of full comp RC for it before and it didn't seem to like it much buried in Red Oak, so that's why I ordered the SC skip and broke all the other chains down for the 18" bar.

A 346/372, MS260/MS460, 5100/7900 combination make a nice pairs... you can't go wrong with them... (had to include a few brands there to sooth the masses LOL)

Ian

I bought the 395 for 2 things....taking down good sized trees and bucking. Both places the weight isn't a huge factor to me. Fast cutting is. The 346 will be for cleanup after the tree is down.

You guys have seen Derek's PP346 45cc run right, well this is the sister saw. If Bill dont get it, Hmmmmmmmm. LOL

I told Brent to ship it. There I done went and done it! If I get it by the end of the week I've got some trees to take down in the 12-14" range and this will make a nice saw for that.
