Had a discussion with the father inlaw, are Stihl and Oregon bars and chains exactly the same with different names stamped on them?

nooooo

Absolutely not. Husky/Dolmar are rebadged Oregon stuff. I think there's others also. Stihl makes their own stuff...

Like the others said, he's wrong, but...in Europe some of the Stihl-branded bars are not Stihl-made, if memory serves. I'm sure SawTroll will chime in with the details before too long. But for what we can get here in North America, Stihl is Stihl and everything else is not Stihl.

In Canada not all the stihl branded bars are made by stihl. Some of them are made by oregon
Yep, actually I have never seen a newer stihl in Canada with a real stihl bar on it. I don't know about the 660 and 880 but even the 441 has a Oregon bar on it.
I also wonder about the Chain as the stuff I have seen does not have the colour Green or Yellow on the link.

stihl

No, stihl bars and oregon bars are NOT the same. Stihl bars are much more durable than oregon. Look at the replaceable sproket tips from both manufacturers. Stihl is held on with 3 rivets and oregon is only held on with one rivet.:greenchainsaw: :)

Canadian bars and chains usually does not have the colour code.Stihl chain is only made by Stihl!

Stihl has occasionally used Oregon bars when the demand outnumbers the production. With the opening of the new bar plant for Stihl in Virginia Beach they will not have to outsource bars except for extreme emergencies.

Paint has always Peeled off my Oregon bars before long and shows the discoloration of the heat treatment area of the bar. I have used my Stihl bar much more than my last couple of oregon bars and the paint is still on the Stihl bar though the paint is wearing off.

As far as I know, most Stihl bars in Canada are rebadged Oregons.
Some have beed sold in the US as well, when the German made Stihl bars were in short supply.

The Oregon made bars I have seen (in pictures only) say just "Rollomatic" on them - no "E" or "ES".

All European Stihl bars are made in Germany by Stihl, as far as I know.

Husky actually make some of the bars themselves (shorter ones), here in Norway - but I believe most on the US and CA markets are rebadged Oregons, as is all the RSN and longer laminated ones here + the 3/8" lo-pro ones.

Dolmar bars are all Oregons, as far as I know.
