i had a chance to run some of my saws in the same 12" very dried water oak log. all of the saws were using the same 33RSC 72 chain, which i ground bf beginning. i was trying to let the saws self-feed and keep the rpms in the sweet spot of the range. i tried to be as neutral as possible. what suprised me was that the saw i thought was the fastest, the 262, was bested by the 361 and 310MM, and was pretty much tied by the 359. in larger wood and it begins to show its superior power over the 357/361. the 346 can be excused bc it is brand new, out of the box. it also gives up 7cc to the next closest saw. i modded the muffler but it was dark when i finished.

Well I'll jump in

First of all i would like to say thanks for taking the time to do this, I love vids. No matter how much guff youll get it looked like you did well here to try to show whatever differences do or do not exist. All i can say is thank the lord you dont have a 5100 or this would get ugly quick

IDK but it looked to me like the 361 was a whisper quicker than the rest (roughly timed from the vids)? Is the 346 a stock E-tec with the cat muffler? If so thats not bad at all for brand new saw giving up that much displacement is it? And I guess the muffler mod thing does hold water cause the 310 looked pretty tough there. To me the one that was the biggest suprize was the 357, it looked like it maybe underperformed some? Again all of this is based on roughly timing the vids. And just for the record everybody, I already know I'm wrong.:deadhorse:

I enjoy all the vids here but to be honest.....I think the quality of the chain, its sharpness and keeping the saw in the powerband are biggest factors to getting a quick cut. Attach a 394 to dulled chain and my 357 will smoke it all day long.
JMO.
I think the only fair way to measure a saws power is to put the same b/c on each saw and make about 10 cuts, averaging the times, with a chain touch up between saws.
The 357 especially does not like to be bogged, and it did not sound like it was where it needed to be for the quickest cut rev wise. A muffler mod and hs carb tune really woke up my over muffled 357, a under rated saw me thinks.

So just for grins took my watch and clocked all the cuts. Here is what I came up with.

Did not look like that big of a difference but thats what my clock said. I think nmurph said same chain on all saws right? Did you time em nmurph?
That 357 time still way suprizes me, I think summin might be up there? The Huskys still win the prize for best sounding saw IMO. My 361 has that annoying tinny springy sound at idle too. I've taken it apart and cleaned it several times but it still sounds the same. Think its something in the clutch. Does not hurt the saws performance though.:greenchainsaw:

Great videos, Thanks for posting them. MS361 was definitely fast, but I really like how well the 346xp did not even broken in yet. Hoping the 346 will be my next purchase.

Henry- i agree that more cuts would give a more reliable result. unfortunately, the log i have a the house is not long enough to allow for 10 cuts with each saw. the chain was freshly ground and the wood was clean so i don't think there would be much decrease in performance bw the first saw and the last. i'm not saying it wouldn't matter at all, but bet i cutting is more of a variable than the chain.

Muley- the 346 is an E-Tech version, or at least it was in that vid. it now sports a MM non-cat, it was dark and too late last night when i got everything put back together. also, at this point it has less than 25 cookies under its belt.
the 310 really holds its own in this comparo. it has the best sound to me. i have a stock muffler that i want to put on it and redo the cuts.

here are the times....pretty much the same spacing as what you have:

346- 10.40 avg
359- 10.88 avg
357- 10.40 avg
310- 9.45 avg
262- 10.32 avg
361- 8.66 avg

btw, i have some vids on here comparing the 310mm, 359, 026 and 5100.

Thanks for the comparison vids Murph. One question though. Is that 346 wearing a 20" bar? It sure looked like it and if it is I'm suprised nobody picked up on that.

Don't be surprised if that 346 is a couple seconds faster with the new muffler. I hope you can run it in the same log and post another vid of it. BTW, thanks for taking the time to post the vids. I know how much time it takes, but throroughly enjoy it.

The biggest surprise here for me is the 262. That does seem odd.

well i'm back from setting smokey bear on fire. we burned today, but wind was not consistant and it took a lot longer than expected. i did get to run the 346 some today, but it is still on it's first tank. i can tell a definite difference with the second opening in the non-cat muffler. it is tuned to 13.4K WOT and still plenty of 4-stroke. here is a vid of it after the MM. i also threw in a 7900 vid of the same log. i didn't have time to change the bar/chain, and i know the chain has at least 2hr on it since it was sharpened.

Brad, how big can i go on the 2 hole and do you leave the stock hole and deflector stock? i didn't change the stock hole and i made the second port .5". i can always make it larger!!!!

all saws used the exact same chain, except the 7900, obviously.

i need to tach the 262. i think it is running rich. compression was 170, or so when i checked it.

you are right on about the time difference: about 2 seconds. i may check squish and see if there is anything to be gained there.

that is the same log. i think i can get about another dozen cookies from the bar!!!!!

I'm on too slow of a connection to watch your new videos, but that should put that little 50cc bugger right at the top of the heap.

I leave the stock exhaust alone and make the second as large as the Husky deflector allows. I would guess that it's probably 1/2"-5/8" by 1 1/4", so a lot larger than yours. It still idles perfectly and has that characteristic lightening throttle response. I do use the spark arrestor screen, so that drops the area back down some.

this is the other thing i did today. we use fire extensively to manage our woods and wildlife. this was a 15ac sagebrush opening that we deer hunt over in the fall. the fire went from end to end in 6min, wind-aided (6-10mph).
