I am going to change the cylinder, piston and rings on a Husky 395xp for a friend. What other parts would I need for the job? Just gaskets? Any special tricks involved? Also, are the aftermarket kits any good? I'm a newcomer to these saws. Thanks.

Just the gaskets. I never have understood why a piston and cylinder kit doesn't come with gaskets:deadhorse: No real tricks just make sure the arrow on the piston is pointing toward the exhaust.

Consider leaving the base gasket out increasing compression.
Check your squish aiming for 020. plus.
Apply appropriate sealer in place of gasket.
Also consider doing a muffler mod while it is off.

Al.
