I recently bought a 3 lbs dead blow mallet from Harbor Freight on sale for cheap. I was bucking a blue gum that was laying up hill so I had to wedge each cut to overcome the compression. When I stopped to refuel I remembered that I had the mallet in my truck so grabbed it and tried it as it is smaller/lighter then my ax and I was working in a lot of tangle foot and it was one less thing to fall on. I am going to switch full time to the dead blow as it is bright orange, cheap, does not mar the heads of the wedges and it drives with more force because it does not rebound on the strike. I am planning to get a bigger one for felling.

I use a dead blow hammer and a hatchett to spit my kindling, works very well, not much percussion going through my hands from the work either.
