what is the disease that attacks the beech tree bark in central Pa. causing a white powdery substance to appear on the bark, the bark eventually gets hard and checks, and the tree dies.
 
Its called Beech scale Nectria canker and is actually the interaction of the scale insect and the canker fungus. I'm not sure if there is any control, but there may have been recent developments I'm not aware of.
