Once you muff mod one saw, you will want to mod them all
More power, cooler run temps and best of all it makes them louder

Wat i have is a jonsered2159 w a cat muffler and i wantd 2 buy a non cat muffler and was wondering if id gain anything from it

If you are talking diesels, the only thing you will accomplish is making it louder. Unless you are making huge power (500hp/1000 lb/tq ++), freeing up the muff won't increase mpg and won't make the engine run cooler. Dyno backs this statement up.
I think he's talking chainsaws. You will find a lot of opinions, but most agree that the cat mufflers hold heat and slow exhaust flow. If you open them up or change the muff to a non cat, it will help the saw run cooler and make more power. A lot of saws need re-tuned after modding the muffler.....need to be richer.

I think what he's asking is how much power gain can be expected. I read about guys that mod mufflers and claim big increases, but how much is the increase really. As a teenager my buddies said if I flipped the air cleaner lid on my car it would give me 10% more power. It sounded cool so they must have been right....right?

Not certain exactly how much more power your saw will have with a standard muffler or mod but it will be noticeable. Cat mufflers slightly restrict exhaust flow. I replaced the cat on my 353 E-Tech with a standard a couple weeks after I bought it. Much better performance.
Once done you'll need to richen the carb setting a bit. Dunno about all saws but newer Huskies (and I'm presuming J-Reds) have limiters on the carb adjustment screws. The limiter may have to be removed to get your top end RPM setting right. You don't want to run a saw too lean, nor too rich.

Hahaha, oh man, I remember flipping the ole tophats over on my pickups as a kid. It was our cold air intake of the day!
Yeah, a lot of guys did that but I never could figure out how drawing hot air from the engine compartment helped! I kept the snorkel hooked up to cool air and made sure the door worked.
Small Echo CS341 benefits from removing the cat. Less melting of surrounding plastic for one thing. Yikes!

There are NO pros to having a cat muffler on a saw, just cons.

Cats don't really work on chainsaws & are already phased out. I have gotten over them on cars and trucks. Used to cut em off, but they do work fine in the last 25 years or so.
