If you've found that the take up handle of your bench mount rivet spinner has become slack due to wear in the threads (usually in the body casting rather than the handle itself) and no longer stays concentric when spinning ie. it wobbles and causes the rivet head to split, try this fix which I've found to be very effective. Buy a small reel (50 metres) of LOCTITE 55 Pipe Seal Cord (Plumbers merchants, DIY stores etc) and wind 6-8 turns along the length of handle thread that actually screws into the casting. You will probably have to experiment a bit with the number of turns, but don't be tempted to put too many on initially, you don't want the handle to be too stiff and loose all "feel".
Loctite 55 is a tough cord with much better "gap filling" properties than PTFE tape which tends to chew-up too easily.
This fix obviously works best if you spin mostly either 1/4 + .325 OR 3/8 + .404 and are not constantly changing handles.
I've had the cord in for several months with no noticeable change in the improved feel of the handle and it spins like new.
Try it, you might be pleasantly surprised

Sorry, this tip wasn't aimed at your average typical affluent American chainsaw user, rather at the members who don't just junk something when a cheap repair can extend its life considerably. ( No offence to non-affluent American chainsaw user intended)
(This tip is aimed more at your Melvin Lardy type member rather than your Jay Browning type)

I like the idea of repairing or improving a marginal design over replacing it over and over again. If you were going to really use the thing, would it be better to oversize-drill the hole and use a thread insert or threaded steel bushing? A steel-on-steel thread contact should be more durable (maybe smoother) than steel on cast iron.

$50 to replace or $10 in parts and $40 in beer to make it bulletproof?
