Craigslist Ugly Spray-painted 046/066?

I think it's either an 046 or an 066... Can anyone tell by the pictures? I don't know why someone would spray paint it. I am going to drive out there tomorrow to take a look...

Pics are now uploaded.... What are some things to look for when buying a saw that's in this kind of shape? First thing that comes to mind is to see if the oiler is working...However how would I know if the engine needs work? Like main seals or the bottom end. Maybe I can pick up a compression gauge from advanced auto or autozone...

That's an 044/440. You can tell by the air filter cover.

A compression gauge would give you an indication of the condition of the cylinder/piston. You would need to vac/pressure test it to check the seals/impulse line. I would pull the muffler and look at the piston and see if there is any scoring. You will need a T27 torx screwdriver. Pull the bar and chain and see if you can wiggle the crankshaft to see if the bearings are good. You can do the same thing on the flywheel side, but usually the clutch side goes first.

If the saw starts and idles, with the saw idling, turn it on its side, then the other side, forward and then backward. If the idle changes when you do this, there is probably an air leak. Could be seals or impulse line or carb boot.

If you plan on keeping it, I would plan on a new impulse line and fuel line/filter and a carb kit. That's good preventative maintenance.

I was looking at some other pictures on google and the little black button just under the handle/bar wasn't on the 044. Just the 046 and 066... decompression valve?

Thanks for the tips. I don't think I would have thought to pull off the muffler or to check for wiggle... Is there any good way to remove all of that paint? Or does that just add "character"

The saw in the pictures is an 066 Magnum. An early one too with the compression release. I would bet that it's an early poly flywheel saw with the plastic model plate.

For $200 it should run. That series of saw sells for $300 to $500 typically but you have to deduct a bit for ugly. By the way, some commercial companies paint their saws distinctively to reduce the odds of it walking away.
If the saw runs, even if not well, it is worth $200. It may be worth that even if it doesn't run depending on the condition of the parts. Look past the paint for how beat the saw is. cracks, chips, dents, wear on the bottom, missing air filter, etc are all deductions.

Ok, so looking at the pics a bit closer, the saw looks pretty thrashed. No chain brake handle and looks like trauma around that area. The bar is .063 gauge but about worn out. The chain teeth don't seem that worn but based on the peening on the bottom of the side links, my guess is that the nose sprocket on the saw is shot. Offer them $150 for it if it trys to run. If it doesn't run, then you run.

I bet it's stolen and they spray bombed it to hide it. Crack and meth heads do it all the time to anything stolen, not just saws - tools, bikes, toys. Sad.

My thoughts were that it was stolen.... The lady on the phone said they the have a side business where they buy and sell stuff all the time... and it's like they have a large yard sale every day.... So if everything in their yard is spray painted.... yeah... stolen.. Thanks for pointing out the chain break... I didn't notice that until you mentioned it....

I'm going to see how much replacements cost, and if parts are available.

Ohhh... Ugly... Yeah a lot of trama in that area... I also just gave it a closer look. Hard to tell with all that paint there... I don't know if it's worth driving for 2 hours just to look at it... I have a perfectly good running 038 Mag II

However If I can get it cheap I might be able to fix it for cheap, and then sell it too... Remove all of that paint... Etc...

I've seen lower-end tree guys spray-paint saws like that. Mainly to make it ugly (i.e. undesirable) and easily identifiable.

JJ I haven't seen an 066 with the lip on the air filter cover. Here are the last flat top plastics I had and the last 066 I had, neither have the lip. Would an 044 filter cover fit on an 066?

The way that bar is blued and the chain worn I'd say it may have an oiler problem....

The 044 cover can be made to fit an 066 but it requires some trimming and looks funky when mounted.

I cannot see any way to make money off a saw in that condition. I wouldn't even project how many hours it would take to get the paint and overspray off and then you have to refinish or replace the plastics. I wouldn't try it even if it is running condition. That's one of those projects that will nickel and dime you into poverty.
