Do I need more than just a rope to climb?

The answer is yes. You can climb trees with just a rope.

You can tie a rope into a make shift harness.
You can climb on a closed Blakes hitch over a natural crotch using the hip thrust technique.
You don't absolutely need a carabiner either.

I did it when I was teaching myself about tree climbing before I had any real gear. You can definitely climb trees...even very tall ones with just a rope.

I wouldn't advise it for tree work...but you can do it.

Be cautious about that harness.

I am constantly getting visits by people that think I want to buy their "climbing harness". About 4 out of five times that will turn out to be a "fall harness", which is completely wrong and unsafe to use for tree climbing.

Heres the harness I have. Don't know anything about it but the tag on it says "free fall limit 6ft" so I guess its a fall harness. What can you tell me by my pics. It has other stuff with it.

It does look like some fine equipment, though. Unless you plan on working on your roof or out of an aerial device, you should consider selling that equipment and using the proceeds to buy some better climbing equipment.

As you can see from this search, the fall harnesses on the market are going pretty cheap, and yours seem to be of the older, less popular style. Not much value there.

This one looks similar to yours, and only went for $32, including shipping and the breakaway fall lanyard.

That being said, here's a recreational climbing belt that looks like a massive improvement over tying a triple bowline and hanging from a rope:

At $15, how could you go wrong?

The plastic buckles would give me pause...
