I was at the local HD store today and walked by the equipment rental section. They had some chainsaws for sale and one of them followed me home.

Makita (Dolmar) DCS6421. Lightly used. New bar & chain. $279

The dude at HD was good enough to pull the muffler and let me see the piston/cylinder. All looked very nice. The bar is a Home Depot branded unit. Not sure which manufacturer makes bars for the Home Depot brand. The chain was new, but full of bumper links, tie straps and other anti-kickback stuff. Fired right up and runs like a scolded dog. These Dolmar/Makita units are runners. Overall, I think that I got a good deal.

Great saw. Oh yeah, they want $322 for them around here. For $279 I might have to get another one. Since they look the same the wife might not notice they’re reproducing. Someone on the site said make sure all your saws are the same color so that the wife doesn’t notice.

I know a fellow who used to buy a brand new SkiDoo snowmobile every year. It was always black, and his wife never caught on to the scheme.

Just finished upgrading the saw:
- New 7910 Piston & Cylinder Kit
- New Heavy-Duty Air Filter Kit
- Muffler mod (pulled the 2 baffles & guts out)
- Carburetor rebuild
- Oregon Powermatch bar (20")
- New loop of Oregon 72LGX chain

I disassembled most of the saw for cleaning (didn't crack the case). The saw was FILTHY inside. On the tach, it's turning about 12,800 RPM. With the new P/C this little beastie will be my new bucking saw...

Nice find, I just did this upgrade to one of my 6401s love it so far, probably do it to my other one next season.

Mine ran fine with no adjustments, haven’t put the tach to it yet.
