In anyones experience what would be the best shade tree for drought resistance in central Virginia? I believe I could nurse small tulip, oaks, sweet gums that are already on the property. I also have beech and others but I'm not sure what volunteers I have of those. I would be okay going to a nursery.

Thanks in advance.

I am partial to both Hackberry and Bois d'Arc. Hackberry has a Vase shaped canopy with lots of dense shade.

For a spreading canopy Osage Orage had nice shade too. The leaves of the OO will stay on the tree later in the year then most.

Both are drought tolerant. I'm just on the ege of the Central plain and dont actually see a lot of rain most years. They both do very well here at about 1200 feet in a dry hot climate. They also grow well in cooler , wetter areas of the US.
