Dam its Elm,,,

But when I get to cutting I get this faint hint of a beloved smell and then crack
The standing dead is now down and can rest.

Got it home and crack with the 8 pound-er split like hmmmmm red elm

Hundreds of trees 6" to 2 foot round and 2 row deep, so far all red and straight grained and some what easy to split and ready to burn

DED Infected Elm trees

2 row wind breaks surrounding farming fields.

the water behind the trees is the result of flooding this year and yup were still flooded in some spots no place for the water to go so it sets and sits,,, west nile virus is going to be big this year

Looks like a locust grove to me

But I could be wrong..

That's what I was thinking, but those dead trees sometimes throw me for a loop.

NDtreehugger, maybe if you looked around you could see some younger trees (under 6' tall) with thorns or maybe some brown seed pods on the ground for locust indicators. I almost always see bark coming off DED trees in later stages, but rarely on dead/diseased locust. Of course, you have a better view than I do. ;) Regardless, that's a fantastic firewood score--easy access (if you can avoid the swamp), not too much undergrowth, all in one place. :clap:
