The furnace will fit 21.75" in the bottom half, and 24+ at the door, but 20" allows just enough room to settle them in easily.

My OWB has a 30" firebox but I cut my wood 24" because it was cheaper to build a 2' splitter and the shorter cuts are easier to handle.
