The jug growns too though once up to temp, one interesting thing is the exhaust side grows more than the intake as it can run nearly 100f hotter on exhaust side. So cold squish measurments might not be what you get real world. Worst case is like to take a cold saw to full RPM and blip the trottle. The piston heats up faster than the jug and will grow some in height above the piston pin before the jug heats up and grows, then the full RPM condition with the throttle plate closed puts max upward pull on the rod.

Some real high end racing stuff takes this into acount and even herd of honing the jug hot so the shape will be right at running temps. Blocks for drag cars are sometimes machiened hot and even torqued from transmission end to simulate running conditions.
 
Shiny is just the first sign of trouble, after that the piston crown under the squish will look like the surface of the moon with miniture craters.
