I got to try one of my 084s in sum real wood the other day. There is something about bein' buried in a 30" log and havin' a foot of bar stick out the other side. It cuts just fine. I packed it out of the woods on my shoulder for over 1/4 mile, just to see if I could. Impressive machine. I plan to rig up as top handle for it and have a new climbing saw. The 084T :laugh: :laugh: Ya mon!:blob2:
 
Bump: Saw has arrived!

Whoo boy! I think I lucked out! This saw is actually pretty clean! It has some paint missing on the bar cover and case bottom, but recoil cover and front look good. Plastic looks great. Rubber on top handle is great, lotta paint off left side of top handle, some from right. Compression is pretty good, with a 20" b&c and fulla gas and oil it takes several seconds to start falling when held by the handle, several secs between pops or whatever they are called Not like my new 460, but pretty good for an old saw. It sounds GREAT and accelerates really well, and cuts surprisingly powerfully. Well-used Oregon bar with replaceable tip. NO rust on muffler, so stored inside, that's a plus.

Here is the kicker: The very rear of the saw was cracked during shipping,:cry: :cry: musta taken a good toss on the rear end of the box. Well padded like a mummy in bubble wrap and peanuts, but had to have been tossed on its end. The broken part is white, while the rest of the handle is darker, indicating a fresh break. Brad C. sent me the UPS reporting link, and I will contact the dealer to find out the cost of replacing the tank assembly. The break is almost complete, with a small intact part on the rear of the handle, indicating impact from the rear separated the handle completely at the front. Bummer, but I plan to repair the saw, because the balance and sound are just great! I will post pics when I bring my camera home from work tomorrow.

Oh, the serial # is 13495xxxxxx, so it is a 10 mm. So, no BB kit. Oh well, I have larger saws.:greenchainsaw:
 
no... if it's 134xxxxxxxx it's a 12mm...


Good luck with UPS... they almost away say "insufficient packing". Their theory -if it was sufficiently packed, it wouldn't have broken... been there with those turkeys...

If it's double boxed, you have an argument.

If you get stuck for a tank, let me know..

BTW.. if the break is how imagine it.. dead easy to fix 100%...

It was not double boxed, but a bubble wrap mummy and a ton of peanuts. Why can't the Brown Santa at least refrain from trying to break packages?!?!?!?!?! I know they are in a hurry, but man I bet they would like someone to be nice to THEIR stuff! Grrrrrr!

I will try to deal with ups, then after the screw job, will try to learn to solder plastic, I guess.

12 mm, huh? So it has a smaller exhaust port on the cylinder, but a stronger con rod assembly? I sure like the way it sounds and feels. I think I have a new favorite saw...... Oh, who am I kidding. They are ALL my favorites! heheheheh

There a little more to it.. Dig up one of my old my old thread - I show how to fix that break... stongly.. bigbadbob did one recent also.


BTW.. the SHIPPER has to file a claim with UPS, not you. Beware of one point -they will likey want to return the saw to the shipper for inpection- then you loose controll of it.. I lost a saw and my money a few years back.

Didn't see one on plastic welding, but awesome critical thread repair. So PA66 is nylon. Cool. Nylon is tough.

Without your generous dispensation of knowledge, O keeper of the flame, we wood be a buncha dodos with messed up saws (or at least I wood be) :)

OK, I am going to call UPS today.... may ge the ruanround, but i wanna be prepared nonetheless. What is a reasonable price for a used 044 tank/handle assembly? is it about 50.00 to switch out handles? I want to present a fair estimate of teh cost to repair the damage, I may have a greater chance of success that way. Thanks.

That is a shame about the shipping Damage:mad: I once ordered some 6'' lift springs for my truck, They came up from California,via U.P.S. Nothing left of the packaging, and I must say very sturdy packaging! They tried their best to damage them but being basically just steal all they did was put a few scratches on them and they weigh about about 60lbs a piece. It was my way of getting back at U.P.S:cheers:

That's a mighty nice looking 044, you will most assuredly love it, they are just great all-around saws and I find them surprisingly powerful. I read Andy's thread regarding fixing the hande and it indeed looks bulletproof. Think of it as "personalizing" your saw... it'll give you a greater sense of ownership. Most of my saws are HIGHLY personalized!!

They are going to tell you the shipper/seller has to file the claim......

$50-$75 for a used tank; $50 labor is fair...


I'll give you $5 fer the old tank ;)

Bail cutting works better with full skip chain.......
 
Actually the old shark tooth...I gotta get some for this guy.....the auto shapren stuff.

I just need to show him how to sharpen it with a flat file
