Is the tip size the only difference in the bars? If so, what advantages does the smaller tip pose?

The smaller nose radius is less likely to create the energy for severe kickback. Stihl makes a 25 inch ES bar that is green labeled.

The difference between the "E" and the "ES" is... the "E" has a non-replaceable sprocket tip and the "ES" has the replaceable pro tip...The E is a laminated and the ES is machined solid...

And the "E" has a smaller diameter tip, hence......the green label. Also, the "E" bars are lighter, ES bars are heavier.

STIHL Narrow Nose/Wide Nose Guide Bars
Many STIHL guide bars are available in the same lengths, pitches and gauges. Please see dealer or full line catalog for more information.

Advantages of the narrow nose version:

* reduced kickback tendency
* less weight (slim profile)

Advantages of the wide nose version:

* larger sprocket nose bearing
* longer lifetime for frequent plunge cutting applications
